Prime Ali wins a close but clear decision,an active Ali confirmed this for me with the second fight. An absolute best Frazier against an Ali that had a 18rd rounds of boxing in the previous 4 years won a clear decision but caught hell doing it.An Ali, who trusted his legs and stamina prevails here.
That was the third fight in 75, the question is about non exile ali. And i didnt say non exile ali couldnt beat frazier, i said he wouldve always been difficult.
This remains a pick 'em fight. It was still 3+ years of age on Ali (and actually 4 years by the time he actually met Frazier). Ali managed to comfortably overcome his inactivity against Quarry and Bonavena - only months earlier - and it's difficult to know whether or not or how much of a benefit another 8 bouts on top of these would have been to Ali. The extra bouts might have even been to his detriment. Frazier would have always been charged up for this fight and the best he's ever been, whilst posing a hitherto unique challenge to Ali.
You have to make quite big excuses for Frazier not to make Ali the clear favorite here. He is after all 2-1 against Joe, while being older and having that lay-off (something that's unaminously seen as a bad thing for a fighter if he's not named Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard).
Ali, in the real FTC, pre-fight, had little respect for "Little Joe" Frazier. In a hypothetical "no-exile" fight against Joe, Ali again has little respect of Frazier, until the first big Frazier left hook crashes into Ali's jaw.
No exile and they likely meet in 1968. Instead of Mathis (who was on ahead on points when Frazier caught up with him), Joe meets Ali.
Maybe maybe not but my point was whether frazier was the same after the fight or not, Ali didnt have the power to really keep frazier off of him DURING the fight. Even when he stopped frazier, frazier was still giving him an extremely tough time at that point. Thats why i said frazier would have been difficult for ali at any point in his career.
True. In the FOTC Joe won the fight but lost the war. And Ali did make up some lost ground between 1971 and when they fought again three years later while Joe declined. Because of circumstances,Muhammad was probably the only fighter in history who was better at age 32 than when he was 29.
