I think I know what you're referring to and never thought about it till now. I assumed Mayweather would cherry pick Cotto for the 160lb title if Cotto wins. But if Cotto does the other thing.......fuuuuuuck. :!::|

 

Not like he was a ten stone fighter who's risen through the weights though is it? He's just cutting less weight now.

 

I thought he was kind of small for a Welterweight at about 5-6 or 7. He will be small at Middleweight though we know Martinez is also not a large middle.

Being able to stay effective through mutiple weight divisions isn`t easy.

It was a good win considering he was stepping up. I think Martinez is pretty shot though. 39 years old, off for 14 months and decked in quite a few of his prior matches leading up to it. Still a big scalp for Cotto.

 

I saw this fight at MSG. I was shocked at how much mobility and body movement Martinez had lost in just two fights. I was at Mohegan for his annihilation of Dzinziruk, and THAT Martinez I feel would have won handily. This was a step towards achieving ATG status, but a win over GGG would cement it for a lot of people, me being one of them. Several of Cotto's victories have always left me with nagging questions. How does Judah fare if Cotto doesn't give him the Abner Mares treatment? How would Yuri Foreman do on two good legs? Could he defeat a Margarito undamaged by Pacquiao? How would he do against Martinez if his knee wasn't shot? A GGG win would be virtually irrefutable support in staking a claim for ATG status.

 

It makes him one of the luckiest sons of bitches of all time. He's so washed up that's the only way he could possibly have gotten a victory. You don't become an ATG by having your opponents collapse from heat stroke or having things fall on them mid match either. Cotto's chances are slim from here on out unless whoever fights him slips and falls out of the ring.

 

'All Time Great' is an abstract concept in which everyone has different values.

In a literal sense, no one is. My value on the concept is a Great comes along on average every four years or so, and as Queensberry Rules has been established since the early 1880's, that means there have been roughly 30/35 great fighters. Cotto is no where near that sort of crowd.

But he is very good and has battled back from adversity a couple times. And I like that trait in a fighter. Kudos for Saturday Miguel...

 

Cotto is a fan's fighter. Somewhat like Gatti. This is a huge win for him.

 

Martinez never should have taken the fight .. he's been going down hill for the past two years, he's been dropped multiple times and he is a broken down man from a physical standpoint .. a few years ago Martinez would have done a serious number on Cotto but this version was ripe to be taken .. that being said Cottoe did it , he stepped up , fought well and seized the moment .. Cotto has really rebuilt a comeback quite cleverly, winning the jr middleweight title against a game but limited Foreman, catching a softened up Margarito after Paq and Shane clobbered him , losing a decent decision to Floyd and now crushing a broken down Martinez ..

 

No, he's a very good fighter, great for boxing, but he's not an ATG.

Being the first PR fighter to win titles in 4 divisions really sounds better than when you look into it and see whom he fought for those titles, and how many were vacant titles in which he beat modest opposition.

Benitez's 3 titles were much more impressive. Considerably better opposition and less titles to choose from.

 

Some say, and I agree that the only all time greats from this generation are Pacquiao, Mayweather, maybe even Wlad (his opposition may not have been the greatest, but he surely did dominate majority of his late fights). Had Cotto gone to Roach directly before, instead of changing trainers like socks, he would have been better I believe. But at this point, even with this win he still lacks a couple huge wins to be considered an ATG.
