If Ali was a kid now, he’d already be benefiting from changes in nutrition, diet and sports science in the Amateurs.

You don’t seriously think Anthony Joshua would look like he did in the early 1960s. It’s not possible.

Every fighter is a creature of his times.

Joshua is 240 pounds but he is about 3 inches taller than Ali, and at age 18 he probably weighed significantly less than 240.

Ali's nutrition was fine. The food back then in 1950s and 60s was probably better than now.

Where are all these American heavyweights coming out of the amateurs turning pro at 240 pounds at age 18?

And "if Ali was a kid now" is nothing to do with the thread question anyway!

I think he campaigns at heavy from the get-go.

IF, there had been a cruiserweight division, it would have been 190 and under (where it actually did start a few years later...It was only as fighters started to get very much bigger that the cw limit was changed to 200).

Fourteen of Ali's first fifteen fights were over that 190 limit and he was still a teenager for most of those.

He was still twenty years old when he fought Archie Moore, his first fight at over 200 lbs.

And he never fought under 200 lbs again after Moore.

He had the HW title in his sights from the day he turned pro.

    Doubtful with Olympic pedigree.
I guess it would all depend on how many top guys were fighting at CW.

When you're younger, you weigh less. You get heavier as you age.
Ali would not be 240lbs in his early 20s. That would seriously diminish his speed, reflexes and stamina, and without those, he's dead meat, since his fundamentals were poor.

Amen, that is the truth, no Modern (Steroids) Nutrition, fighters back then used common sense over fake vanity.

I think mostly catch weights early on and maybe a some fights at LHW as well (but probably only if there's also a weigh in the day before) and then CW and later on HW. He might actually win the CW crown of Doug Jones and move up the next year to challenge Liston at HW.

    Sorry I misread the OP.

I was thinking if Ali was around now, would he fight at heavyweight.

Ali would have quickly gone up to 225. so they wouldn't put him in the Bridgerweight Division. Once they place you in there, it's very hard to get out. "Just when you think you're out, they pull you back in!"
