Does An Impressive Win By Cotto Make Him #2 P4p?

#2 or #3, depends on how impressive he looks.

Only Pac is safe at #1.

I think after Joe C blatantly ducked Pavlik he kinda gave up his claim to #1 p4p and #2 p4p anyways.

P4p to me isn't so much about accomplishments as it is a ficticious rating of how guys in different weight divisions would do against eachother if they could all naturally fight in the same weight division. Thats my understanding of the purpose of p4p. Personally i think that all things being equal if everyone was in the same division Cotto or Manny would be the champ. I'd rate them higher then Calzaghe already.

It would for me but if he wins a close fight on points I'd keep him where he is.

Barring it being controversial or very close, then yes. He's got a legit claim at #2 already, and this would cement that title.

Beating Oscar wouldn't move him up the list at this point, it's a good win, but who doesn't think he'd win that fight? Margorito is a tougher fight right now anyhow, by far.

If Margarito wins, where does this place him on the current P4P list?

Assuming he beats Margarito, Cotto's CV would include pretty much every single top ten welterweight besides Paul Williams: Margarito, Quintana, Mosley, Judah, Urkal, Malignaggi (jr. welter), Maussa (jr. welter), and N'dou (jr. welter) etc. These wins come in arguably the best division in boxing.

Hopkins is a HOF fighter. Joe beat him in mediocre fashion, but a win is a win. Calzaghe dominated Jeff Lacy. But, who is Jeff Lacy? He slept through his fight with Peter Manfredo. People attribute his recent failures to Calzaghe's punishment, but who had Lacy beat prior to the Calzaghe fight? Calzaghe's win over Kessler was his best win imo, but that depends on how good Kessler really is. Kessler dodged Miranda and chose instead to fight a no-name fighter in Denmark.

The other thing you have to consider is activity. Cotto and Calzaghe fought one week apart in April of this year. Cotto is fighting again in a month. Calzaghe isn't fighting until November.

Calzaghe is also fighting RJJ in November. Not Pavlik. RJJ isn't even on most people's top ten list of 160-175 pound fighters, let alone p4p fighters. If Calzaghe had chosen to fight another top ten p4p figher, fair enough, but a win over an aging RJJ isn't going to lift him any higher in the rankings.

    I'd agree with the consensus:

    1. Pac
    2. Calzaghe
    3. Cotto

Cotto still would need a victory over atop 10 p4p.

Good post, however, I think you need to give Calzaghe some credit. P4P rankings are skewed toward the smaller weight classes. If you look at the p4p rankings right now only two boxers fight above 160 pounds (Calzaghe Pavlik) (I think Hopkins is retiring now). For example, if Calzaghe had chosen Pavlik and beat Pavlik, I think he would probably deserve the #1 P4P. That would mean he would have been the LH, SMW, and MW champion of the world. How often has that been done? Of course, he opted to avoid Pavlik, and fight RJJ so the point is moot.

So essentially everyone on this thread sees Pacquiao as the consensus #1. It all comes down to Calzaghe or Cotto is #2. Then that means JMM is#4 right?

No, he's fighting Margarito for God's sake.

I was wondering why there is no rematch clause between Cotto and Margarito?

Because it is going to be a bloody war. If Margarito wins, I could see a rematch.
