I would see why there would be no rematch if Cotto dominated the dude and wins by a wide UD or KO/TKO. But what if Cotto wins by a close UD or SD? What then? Still no rematch?...

maybe. but, wouldn't you rather see Cotto clean out division e.g. fight Williams?

I am all for it. But then again, Margarito will come back complaining that the battle was far from over. But what do I know right? It is just a scenario. Can't believe the fight is still 26 days away and it is still far out until we know who is the #1 welterweight in the world.

Margarito is one of those fighters who, for some reasons - some understandable others totally esoteric -, benefits from undue indulgence.

He is a bit of a myth, one that Mayweather contributed to in no small way by taking on Baldomir instead of him but also for breaking the promise he made to give Margarito a fight (foolish).

Suddenly,Tony became "the most feared man". A positive was made from a negative.

But the positive never really materialized in the ring, at least not to the extent of the myth that was being created around Margarito.

Margarito is also a bit of an icon for blue-collar mentality boxing fans, i.e. those who typically dislike slick boxers who have success. There is no louder and annoying fan than one who likes athletes not as much for their qualities and merits as for the hatred they carry for their opponents.

Sadly, a good bunch of Margarito fans are like that.

Well can that statement be also argued for Miguel Cotto?

    My list:

    1 - Pac
    2 - Calzaghe
    3 - Cotto
    4 - Izzy
    5 - JMM
    6 - Raffy
    7 - Mijares
    8 - Pavlik
    9 - Calderon
    10 - Guzman

So if Margorito beats Cotto? Depends on the method, by KO? I think he'd drop Cotto to probably 10, and Margorito hitting probably 8. By Decision, drop Cotto to 10, Margorito 9.

Either way it'd drop Guzman off the list, move the rest up.

If Cotto dismantles Margarito, do you keep him at 3 or does he move up to 2. After what Manny did on Saturday night, he should keep #1 regardless.

Since the Mosley fight, where he strategized and backpedaled, I sense that fans perception has changed.

Run through every debate pertaining to his upcoming fight and you will likely get that sense that Cotto is more and more viewed as the white-collar boxer (to keep the analogy going), Margarito being the "people's man".

Yes, he would take #2 on my list, and keep in mind that Calzaghe only holds a slight lead over Cotto, and as of right now I'm convinced that Cotto is the better fighter of the two, but legacy does have something to do with these rankings, you can't discount the past over the present. Then again, you also can't rest on the past as to future performance. Thus why Bernard is no longer on my P4P list, he's not P4P anymore, either is Oscar, Shane, Winky, Tarver, etc.. A great win is enough to move up the list when the other guy isn't taking on such challenge. It'd be enough to switch the two according to my criteria.

Possibly. Let me see, right now Calzaghe, JMM & Cotto are pretty close to each other, with Pac pretty sealed as #1 until he looses or the other 3 gets a big win whilst Pac sits around.

Joe Cazaghe - 2 weight division champ
    Eubank
    Lacy
    Kessler
    BHop

Cotto - 2 weight division champ
    Mallignaggi
    Quintana
    Judah
    Mosley
    Margarito

JMM - 2 weight division champ
    Pac draw & controversial loss
    MAB
    Juarez

He would IMO overlap JMM (although JMM has a chance to catch up when he fights Casamayor) but I think I still give Calzaghe the edge. Eubank & BHop are 2 great fighters whereas Cotto only has one in Mosley. Margo could possibly rate higher than Kessler but as of now im giving Kessler the benefit of the doubt and hold him in higher regard. Lacy was nothing, Judah win was far more impressive and Malignaggi is the equivalent of it.

I think that Calzaghe is #1 and Cotto in my mind is already number #2...And will be pushing Joe for the top spot, should or when he beats Margo.

you say this after cotto just fought gomez, and is then fighting margo who although tough is along way away from a p4p list? so cotto can fight gomez, but fighting rjj after hopkins is not allowed?

I was comparing records in the context of p4p rankings. Cotto's domination of Gomez didn't propel him up in the p4p rankings, much like Pavlik's massacre of British Gary Lockett failed to improve his p4p ranking. Margarito is a fighter Floyd allegedly ducked and a fighter who is coming off two decisive KO's of Kermit Cintron. The current RJJ is not a fighter receiving comparable critical commendation. Ask yourself why boxings fans everywhere are excited for the Cotto v. Margarito fight, but were disappointed when Calzaghe chose RJJ as his next opponent. Again, not to take anything away from Calzaghe's amazing career, but we are talking about the top p4p fighters.

Did you not see Manny's fight last Saturday night?
