Does An Impressive Win By Cotto Make Him #2 P4p?

    The what-if's:

If Cotto dismisses Margarito in decisive fashion - say a middle round KO - then I think he jumps in the current rankings. Maybe Calzaghe maintains his position at #2 until the RJJ fight. If he doesn't KO RJJ and wins by a boring decision, while Cotto fights another top ten welterweight and dominates him, Cotto should jump above Calzaghe. Sorry for the hypotheticals.

What if RJJ pulls of a spectacular upset, and beats Calzaghe?

Does he go back into, or even considered for, the P4P list?

Honestly, I dont think he would

No, but Calzaghe would fall off the list completely.

Roy beating Joe at this stage would mean that Joe has diminished as bad or worse than Roy. It doesn't mean Roy is P4P, it'd mean that both have declined to the point of no longer being top fighters in the sport.

If he beats Margo he is clearly #2.

If Roy beats Calzaghe, he doesn't make the P4P list in my book, but he would in the Ring's. Exhibit A is Hopkins getting dropped off the list after losing twice to Taylor, then SKYROCKETING to #3 after dominating Tarver.

Yes it does; Cotto should go in at no2, imo.

Calzaghe looked awful against Hopkins. He could have barely looked worse and won.

Taylor looked better against popkins then Calzaghe did.

Calzaghe is now evading the tougher fights also.

Give Cotto credit for what he's doing, if he wins convincingly stick him in at no 2.

keep dreaming Mayweather managed to avoid 3 or 4 fighters and still stayed at number 1.Until Calzaghe and Pacman loses or retires I dont see how you can put Cotto higher as there is no one good enough to beat in his division

I know your just looking for a reaction but anyway,2 points.

1.Pacman also won a very close decision against a guy ranked lower than Hopkins in P4P list
2.Calzaghe travelled to Hopkins home country and home weight and beat him infront of his home judges and ref, dont get better than that.

But in the context of p4p rankings, will fighting RJJ hurt or help Calzaghe?

"Margarito is a fighter Floyd allegedly ducked and a fighter who is coming off two decisive KO's of Kermit Cintron. The current RJJ is not a fighter receiving comparable critical commendation. Ask yourself why boxings fans everywhere are excited for the Cotto v. Margarito fight, but were disappointed when Calzaghe chose RJJ as his next opponent. Again, not to take anything away from Calzaghe's amazing career, but we are talking about the top p4p fighters."

Cotto's victory over Mosley is comparable (not identical) to Calzaghe's victory over Hopkins. Hopkins and Mosley are both assured HOF's.

Cotto mopped the floor with Gomez and if he beats Margarito decisively, will have have beat a much liver opponent than RJJ is to Calzaghe. Cotto, therefore, will be more active, and have fought better competition within the relevant time period. For Calzaghe to retain his ranking, I think he needs to KO RJJ or dominate him like he did with Lacy. Given his boring win over an aged Hopkins, both possibilities appear doubtful.

there you go you said it Mayweather ducked Margarito and it didnt hurt him,he stayed at number one.Hopkins only dropped when he lost,if Calzaghe loses then fair enough,if he wins then how can you drop him?.Same rule for all,you trying to make different rules for white guys or European guys which one?.Maybe Pavlik should drop also as the guy he fought was ****,maybe Cotto should be dropped because Gomez is **** also.As for Mosley being comparable to Hopkins to apponents when Cotto and Calzaghe fought, not really one was regarded as the 3rd best fighter on the planet the other wasn't in the top ten.No one is gonna change your mind though.

You aren't making sense homeboy. I'll make it easy: Cotto is more active than Calzaghe and fighting better competition during the relevant time period. If Cotto dismantles Margarito (which I'm not sure he'll do btw), he will have beat a liver opponent than RJJ is to Calzaghe. Now, Calzaghe may be able to change things if he KO's RJJ or win decisively like he did against Lacy. If Calzaghe chose to fight Pavlik, and beat him (which very well may have happened, who knows?), the debate would be over. Calzaghe would be #2 and have a strong case for the #1 spot. Even if Cotto beat Margarito. But, fighting a lesser opponent who is way passed his prime, doesn't win you any points on the p4p list.

I like how this thread is running concurrently with the thread titled "If Margarito knocks out Cotto within 5...what will you think of him...?" Well, this thread should be called, If Cotto knocks out Margarito within 5, what will you think of him..?

calzaghe just fought a top 5 p4p fighter hopkins in his last fight, whilst cotto fought gomez. cotto is yet to fight a top 10 p4p fighter.

what part of that don't you understand?
