I dont think a undefeated record is overated. You fight to win.
Not to say because a boxer is undefeated that he is the greatest, but if he challenged himself throughout his career and every fighter he came up against fell short, I do feel like credit should be given for just being too damn good for the opponents in your era.

I understand the whole you loss because you challenged yourself. IMO you loss because you wasnt good enough on that night. If you was good enough to win the fight you would of. There is never any pride in losing. The greats are remembered because of there wins. The way it should be.

I kind of hate this attitude by boxing fans, and I feel like this is partially the reason why boxing is in such a strange place right now. Promoters love a fighter with an '0' so they protect them and we as fans don't get to see great fighters take on other great fighters. Your Rocky Juarez analogy is pretty weak by the way, everyone agrees that winning is a perquisite for greatness (and always has been). But for me, I respect a fighter that has challenged himself and lost, then those who never, or hardly challenged themselves at all. Quick newsflash, everyone fails occasionally. How do you think humans learned to create fire? Divine inspiration? Hell no, it was trial and error, failure and success.

Its floyd's fault, he has been such a marketing boy with his 0 that boxers copy him and avoid the best to stay undefeated as well.

an example of a true great is a fighter who can lose by knockout and come back and regroup and still win titles and fight great fights. I never thought a loss was too bad as long as they came back and showed how great they were after.

No its that you usually lose when you fight the best, its not 100% of course but almost anytime a guy is undefeated you can see that he has cherrypicked rather than fought everyone.

A Lennox Lewis retiring 41-0-1 is easily a top 3 Heavyweight in everybody's list. He was fully capable of doing that too, but slipped up

Losses don't make you great. However, they don't neccesarily prevent you from being great. I'm confused as to why people think otherwise.

    People have double standard.

When a fighter dont loose, he surely is cherry picking, he robbed another, he stay at home, etc.

When a fighter loose, he is finish, he is a bum, he got exposed, etc.

In my view, an undefeated fighter usually have this confidence that he is the best and that he cannot loose. When he do loose, that confidence is shattered and his job (and his trainer job) is to try to regain that confidence back. Some do, some are never the same.

In any case, people here have double standard and are often writing stupid things because they dont have to talk in the face of the boxer and/or in front of others. People should always think "is this something I'm confortable to say in front of the boxer or in front of the other posters in real life?". If not, just shut up.

I agree 100% on this. Other sports have the best of 7 games for example. Usually the best team win because in case of a bad performance you can redeem yourself.

This pretty much. It's not the L's that make a legacy that much it's what quality of compo have you got your W's from.

Would laugh if he loss just to see his reaction but "blame the people for being ignorant not the spokesperson of it". It's dumber for so-called "fans" to seriously feel an 0 defines a fighter as Floyd and Rocky can't control how people feel. It's who you legitimately beat as I always say that matters the most.

Opposition makes fighter great, fighting best of your time not ducking, even if you pick up few losses but you fought everybody its better than undefeated without fighting the best!!!

Roy Jones was undefeated for 14 years (1989 - 2003). 14 years is a long time.
