Does Andre need to go around and flip the finger, talk trash and generally act like a racist buffoon to try and siphon off some of the ***** fan base, raise his profile and generate the million dollar PPVs ?

Nah, just look at Pac. They both have the same beleifs in Jesus, both are pretty much respectful guys... Of course Pac is the more exciting fighter, but Ward has more tools (if he stepped it up he would be a lot more exciting). I admit Ward has been boring in quite a few fights, but I thought his demolishment of Froch was exciting. He never ran, stayed in the pocket and beat Froch to the punch over and over again.
Ward is most hurt by lack of competition (beating up Froch again in England will be great for him though) and all his injuries/ long layoffs. After he beats Froch again, he just needs some decent names from 160 division or 175 division to feast on. Ward is one of the very few people, since he has the obvious top dog at 168, that I'd say make guys move up from 160, catchweight them, whatever it takes. Even 175 you got Hopkins, but doubt that fight gets made but I don't think anybody at 175 is beating him either. Some exciting fights is all he needs.

If Ward wants that kind of attention, then yeah, he'd need to start becoming a somewhat controversial character to start turning heads. But even then it won't make that much of a difference because the division in which he's operating in, is pretty ****. Not only is the competition lacking, but there isn't a 168 Golden Boy for him to be blessed by like Mayweather was by Oscar.

He's just gonna' have to take the hard route like Hopkins did, and let his in-ring skills do the talking. He's gonna' have to amass a long string of victories and solidify an ATG status, before getting the wider recognition he's looking for. He can start by overcoming those injury problems he keeps having. Because they've killed his momentum since winning the Super Six.

Then why sign to fight Pavlik, a guy who hasn't done anything at 168? Because Pavlik is a sellable name in the U.S. This is a business and Ward wants the paydays. Absolutely nothing wrong with that and I commend him for it.

He's only calling out joe for the pay day. It's not a credible fight for a top tier fighter at all.

Ward will never be a big draw or attain superstar status in the U.S.

In order to gain superstardom among the American boxing fan you need to either...

    A. Knock mutha****az out in spectacular fashion
    B. Defeat boxers that people actually give a **** about
    C. Have an eye-catching aesthetically pleasing "flashy" style that jumps off the screen at you (ala Mike Tyson/Muhammad Ali/Sugar Ray Leonard/Roy Jones/Floyd Mayweather etc.)

    or

    D. Develop some sorta schtick

Ward has done none of the above, or doesn't have the capability of doing any of the above, therefore will likely always be a sub-par draw.

Somewhere down the line he'll probably get a chance at B. as the bigger name fighters eventually move up in weight.

But if Ward was born in a European country, with his Olympic Gold medal and complete dominion over his weight class, he would be one of the richest & most popular athletes in whatever European country he hailed from, regardless of his style. Euro's have a habit of turning boxers with boring and/or unaesthetically pleasing boxing styles into regional superstars (Wlad, Ottke, Hatton, Calzaghe etc.)
