Does any heavyweight that came before Joe Louis beat Joe Louis?

I don't know if Johnson defeats him, but I would have liked to see how Louis-Johnson played out more than any other prior Louis opponent even more than Dempsey-Louis.

 

Dempsey has the best chance even though i think Louis is a favourite

Tunney in a 12 rounder could perhaps do it but IMO Louis stops him, and especially does so in a 15 rounder. Tunney was brilliant but he was 15 lbs heavier than Conn, and therefore, a bigger target. Tunney also kept his hands relatively low so its only a matter of time before Louis catches him with a big combination.

 

I would favor Joe Louis against anyone who fought maybe up until Sonny Liston, but let's be honest that a few guys would have a puncher's chance.

I don't think that there has ever been a man who would literally have beaten everybody who came before them.

If you fight enough elite opponents, you are going to lose at some point.

 

I agree, though put me down for front row seats if the Louis vs Dempsey bout could be arranged, it would be a mighty fine match up.

Louis vs Johnson, both in their prime, both bringing their A game, damned that is a dream bout.

Either of the 2 above match ups in todays era would be PPV record breakers.

 

Agreed .. I can see Johnson completely confusing him ... I love Dempsey but after two rounds the odds shift dramatically .. he'd have to hurt him badly early, maybe a one in three shot .. maybe Tunney , maybe ..
