Fitz is legendary, but at 160 he looked thin to me. Fitz filled out more so at 170+ pounds... At 160 I'm not sold that Fitz would KO Hagler...

Just watched hagler mugabi yesterday. Hagler had an unbelievable chin really. I feel that the mugabi of the hagler fight would have shocked a lot of great for middles with his tremendous power and agression.
The thing is with hagler that when tagged clean he either carried on as if nowt happened ,or counterpunched,or just stepped back for a few seconds to clear his head.He seemed to recover very quickly when hurt or stunned and unlike many (la motta, chuvalo) didnt just stand there or turtle up. Coupled with his elusiveness and smart boxing brain an almost impossible task to stop him at 160. Fitz and langy two outside shouts. A lot of speed, power and unorthodox suprise delivery is needed for this task.

How does anyone assess Dick Tiger's chin as compared to Hagler's?

Didn't Hearns hit Hagler's bold head instead of Hagler's chin ? there is a difference and it's not zeroing in

:thinkgood question. i think tiger's middleweight era was much strong than hagler's however it wasn't filled with too much huge bangers. however, fernandez was as strong a puncher at 160 as anyone hagler fought and tiger didn't seem hurt at all by him. hagler still had no issues with huge bangers like hearns and mugabi (though they were both naturally smaller)

tiger was only really knocked out against foster, a fate some would predict would happen to hagler if he'd challenged spinks. still based on the quality of opposition, quality of punchers and durability, i give hagler the edge here

Thank you for that good analysis Jorodz...:good..and the reason I ask that question nis to interject a thought..Tiger had an excellent chin as well as being one of the strongest middles ever, and yet Emile Griffith...Griffith of all people..a welter turned middle with a 10 lb disadvantage in weight turned the trick of being the first man to deck Tiger..sent him to a knee with a short, hard counter right hand..I think it's conceivable that the same could have happened to Hagler..maytbe even by Griffith, or else another fighter maybe not necessarily thought of as a "big puncher"...of course it didn't happen to Marv...only that bad call he had ruled against him by Poldan, but maybe vs another, more resourceful fighter of history, who knows...I think ANYBODY could be deckedat the right time, by the right punch.

I still take Jake LaMotta's set of whiskers over Hagler's or any middleweight.
Young LaMotta took the right hand blasts of Bob Satterfield ,survived on his feet and kod Satterfield. LaMotta fought LHs and was never dropped til the end of his career when a light heavy blaster Danny Nardico floored him.
Marvin Hagler was NEVER tested against a LH as a Michael Spinks or a Bob Foster. And I still think that were Marvin Hagler to be weight drained ,as LaMotta was in his last bout with a razor -sharp Ray Robinson, couldn't have
absorbed ,while HELPLESS, the terrible volleys of Ray Robinson, and remain on his feet as Jake LaMotta did...No middleweight could have IMO....Cheers.

    No.

If Hearns threw one of his hardest right hands, and it hardly phased Hagler, I would say no Middleweight in history could.

Him and Robinson are the only two Middleweight who hold that distinction IMO (i.e. not being KOed in their prime by any other Middleweight in history).

All the others like Monzon, Greb, Hopkins, Flowers, Jackson, McClellan, Benn etc could all be KOed.

Fitzsimmons didn't KO ol' Joe Grim at 170. (Although he did go down 20 times.)

No! Hagler marched through Hearns' artillery & did not Waver.

    His Chin was Granite!
