Does any version of Chavez beat Whitaker?

    You actually didn't have it close to a draw for functional and practical purposes though. You've made this clear. If even watching it later you had Pete winning by 1 or 2 rounds, then when you add your further extrapolation of the fight; that Pete won his rounds decisively, where as Chavez nipped his rounds. We thus know from the above statement, the rounds Chavez even did win, were close rounds that could've gone the other way. Thus, when all of the above is considered, no, you didn't have it close to a draw even in your mind.

    If I had it one round from a draw, I had it damn close to a draw.

    Which means, that a fitter, younger Chavez, at a more natural weight and closer to his absolute prime, would have had a chance of beating Pete.

    And I feel compelled in this idiotic world to say that Pete was one of the greatest boxers ever to lace up gloves. I think he is STILL underrated, largely because he had such a sh*tty personality. He was absolutely brilliant and very original in his ringcraft.

    The fact that Chavez held him to a draw, even when past his best and a weight division or two too high, speaks volumes of the greatness of Julio.
