"could survive...and win a decision"? As in, would it be theoretically possible? Yes.

I've seen a few people talk about Roy Jones HW and how given the right situation could win a decision against most any HW that ever lived....

I'm not in that camp at all--I think Jones loses every time to most "great" heavyweights and plenty of non-great ones. But I think he has a non-zero chance against Louis, given Louis' slow feet.

Well if slow light punching Billy Conn could rock Joe Louis then why would you think a much faster, much harder puncher in Roy Jr couldn't do the same? Joe Louis was overrated and was lucky to fight in such a weak era.

Over 12 rounds with a big enough ring there's very chance it could happen.

I wouldn't expect it to happen but Jones is a master at pot shotting from range.

With all due respect BlackHerc you're delusional. And you forget eras. RJJ was pan fed for the Ruiz fight. How about a 1940 prime RJJ against a prime 2000 'Brown Bomber'? Bring out the body bag folks! Nuff said, next thread.

    No.

If he realistically could, then he basically wasted his life!

Not true mate. A match with DM and Lewis aside he fought the best out there.

With hindsight, after he beat Ruiz. Would you recommend he drop down to face Tarver? Or carefully match hm at HW?

On your first point, I would say that a match with DM was quite a serious omission.

He probably needed that more than any other.

On your second point, I would definitely have matched him carefully at heavyweight.

I think that dropping down to 175 took a terrible toll on him, and I think that there were genuine options for him at heavyweight.

I'd say he is an even bigger ommission for DM.

I firmly believe he could have faced Tyson, Holyield and Byrd over the next two years finishing up as lineal HW champ.

Louis was great but didn't have great foot speed.

Jones could use his legs to last the distance.

I would favor Louis to win a decision, though.

You might well be right, but DM was at least the lineal champion.

    That needed to be resolved.
Perhaps he could, but even if it hadn’t worked out like that, it would still have been better than losing to Tarver at LHW.

If he beats Tyson or Holyfield he is the new Ezzard Charles, and if he loses to them, then there is no disgrace.

People forget that nobody was even talking about the Klitschko's at the time.
