Mitch Green had some much talent and could've been champion only if Don King didn't mess up with his reputation and money. I want to see if somebody as any televised fights of Green that I could pay for.
I highly disagree with your premise Green started off as one of "Tomorrow's Champions" and was slow to progress so was dropped by his promoters. Once he went with King he was given a shot against a thought to be declining Trevor Berbick and was comprehensively outpointed. He then got a shot at a young Tyson and was beaten up but did show a very good chin. Don King didn't prevent Mitch Green from being champ. Green simply wasn't that good
I don't understand, even Mitch Green said that Don King stole all of his fame, money, and his own career. He said it in an interview so I know what I am talking about But I do agree with you about his slow progress with his career, he should've have fought tough competition but not Mike Tyson yet.
Mitch Green's reputation couldn't have been any lower King had nothing to do with that. He was a big tough guy with a good chin (likely due to smoking PCP before fights) and a complete scoundrel out of the ring
Jesus- He was a tall, skinny, arm punching crack addict gang banger who would have become a journeyman if he wasn't so lazy.
Mitch Green had the right physical size and showed a decent chin. But he showed no power, and had amateurish style. As has been pointed out, he stepped up twice and was soundly beaten by contenders both times.
Mitch was very fast, but wasn't as developed as say, Carl Williams. I had his fight with Guy Casale for his 2nd NYGG in 1977. Know he lost to Greg Page in the 1977 National AAU finals, beat Jimmy Clark the same year, lost to Alfonzo Ratliff in the New York-Chicago intercity Golden Gloves, and beat Tyrell Biggs in the 1980 Eastern Regionals, but don't know if anyone have any vidoes or coverage of it.
Let's just say he did bloody well to not get kod by Tyson. I actually think Tyson had fun in there, he wasn't getting hurt by Blood, that's for sure. If he'd have carried on fighting regular, a Witherspoon, Smith or Bruno would have kod him eventually.
There's a good story of a manager who found Green in the early 90s and (according to this interview) there was real interest from Rock Newman to stage a Bowe-Green title fight while Bowe was champion, provided Green got a win or two. Obviously that didn't happen but the story of it was great with some funny Mitch Green antics
I think it's sad, being what he came from, that he didn't do better, but the business and drugs did him in. Being in the Black Spades, I wonder if he knew anything about the Afrika Bambaataa situation. I am sure they had run into each other being members of the gang.
