I've seen a pic of Marquez wearing his new lightweight belt (I believe it was the ring title) after defeating Casamayor and I was surprised that it had Casamayor's name on it. Now is that same belt altered to put Marquez's name on the belt (and Joel get a new belt made), or does Marquez give it back to Joel and get a completely new belt make for himself? I was always curious to know how the physical belts were exchanged. It's always surprising to see the belt collections of former champs and wonder, "WTH, I thought he lost that title to so and so." If anybody can enlighten me, I would be very appreciative.
I believe the new titlist gives the old champion back his belt and then receives his own engraved belt at a future date
New one is made for the new champ. If not, the same belt would have been passed around for years and years and get all trashed.
Really? My understanding is that once you win any title, that "copy" of it is yours forever (unless you hawk it on Ebay).
So where did the phrase "I'm coming home with the belt" come from? Anyways, I'm trying to recall a documentary I saw where a fighter won and took his belt with him on the plane or showed it off at the airport. I just can't put my finger on it right now.
So how are the fighters able to show the belt off during their victory parade (assuming they have one)?
Maybe there's the REAL belt that you have to put up on the line for every fight, and it's the one that gets passed around? They don't start a fight until THE belt is in "their" hands. Every champ gets a personal copy of their own belt though. I know Money had a belt display case that he showed in his UStream.
Obviously every fighter gets their own personal belt once they've won it. Haven't you seen boxers carry multiple belts they no longer hold when they come into the ring?
Good thread ....I was wondering too....But the belt is like a superbowl ring....a trophy of your accomplishment for you to keep.......or hawk on ebay.....or sell on Pawn Stars!! I saw a WBC belt and some Pats SB rings on that show...WTF???
With the ABCs, each titlist gets a new belt, but it doesn't get made until after he wins the fight. Thus, it's customary for the new champ to walk around with the old champ's belt at the end of the fight, but they give it right back to the old champ, and then a few weeks later they get their own belt. As for defending a certain number of times, the Lonsdale Belt (Commonwealth title) is the only belt I know of that works that way.
