Kostas Petrou (1959-), boxer Born in Birkenhead of Greek parents, welterweight Kostas Petrou learned his ring craft with Willaston ABC and became British champion. After losing on his pro debut, he raced to 15 successive victories, beat Lloyd Christie in a title eliminator and then stopped Rocky Kelly in nine thrilling rounds in 1985. He called it a day three years later, unusually after four successive victories.
Too right!!! He was on TV all the time when I was a kid. "The Greek Tank" I think was his nickname, don't remember the Christie fight but I watched the Kelly one and couple of others (Tony Brown, another Scouser) and Sylvester Mittee. The weird thing about his retirement is that his last fight was a KO win over future world title challenger Ensley Bingham. The Rocky Kelly-Tony Brown fight was also a great scrap and well worth watching if you can get your hands on it.
yer gaz his nickname was the greek tank i was talking to turpinr he told me about him, i was reading about him on the net and it said he got in to a street fight and killed some one with one punch, dont no weather its true or not
yeah he punched my mate all over the ring, dropped him a couple of times.when he was presented with his trophy after the fight my mate was given an extra one for taking such a hiding. i think the referee must have been mexican because they didn't usually let amateur fights go on like that. another of my mates got a pummelling of kevin pritchard at the kirkby suite.he knocked my mate down and that was the only time he got knocked down in a contest.
I will always remember him on that midweek ITV boxing programme presented by Gary Newbon. It probably only happened once but he always seemed to be on the same bill as Cowdell and Errol Christie.
My dad (Kostas Petrou) did fail a brain scan but had retest done shortly after and was cleared. The boxing board of control however did not allow him to continue even after he passed the following scans. He trains me as im looking to turn pro one day and i can say from day to day experience i ent known a man to train as hard as he does, when he trains me i crawl out the gym ha.
I know that Kostas really missed boxing because he was right at his peak when his licence was taken away. Life is cruel.
Yea at first he missed it alot because it was his career, after he beat stopped Ensley Bingham when no one gave him a chance he was contender for the british title again, previous to that when he was british champion he was also number 1 contender for the european title but his management adviced him to defend the british which in my opinion he shouldnt of and should of fought for the european, and when he did fight against sylvester mittee he was very ill for the fight and actually passed out just before the fight and was vomiting so he was in no frame of mind to defend his title. I have no dout in my mind that if he was put in for the right fights and done the right things he would of at least won a european title. He also fought lloyd honeyghan on a days notice and lost narrowly on points.
What are the chances that you just happened to stumble upon a thread about your father on the day that you joined? Or, you joined because of this.
I joined for the reason i saw a forum topic on my dad and thought id chat to whoever was involved in the conversation.
So whats he up to these days then, is he still in the biz or does he have a day job and train you at night?
i can remember him. i watched him fight on tv, on a programme called fight night, that used to come on in the 80's. could'nt tell you much about him though, apart from he was greek.
