Does anyone at 160 today stand a chance against a prime Roy Jones jr?

    Ha!

    Hilarious.

Yeah, that's the version of Roy who GG would have been fighting at MW.

    Oh dear.

    What a moron.

You guys are already saying GG's on the decline, yet Roy fought 50 plus fights, across 5 weight classes, which included going to HW and back.

Nobody thinks that Glen Johnson would have beaten Roy at his peak.

It's like saying Wilder would have hammered Mike Tyson, because Danny Williams did.

A peak 25 year old MW version of Roy, was a completely different guy to the version who Johnson beat.

You wouldn't know that though, because you never saw Roy at MW.

GG would never have found Roy's chin.

Roy was bigger, faster, and harder to hit.

Kell Brook had his head bouncing around in the first few rounds.

Roy would have had his head bouncing around like a speed ball.

    Run along you little boy.

3gs best is to draw with an elite. a guy who played with elites in 3 divisions is asking too much.

This is what you are pretty much telling me, so I might as well put the words in your mouth.

I respect the above. But there's just no way of knowing.

I'm hoping that GG can get BJS, and I'm hoping he won't get robbed again against Canelo. Then hopefully he may consider moving up. That would tell us a lot more about him.

GGG or Canelo vs RJJ would look like a tortoise trying to catch an antelope.

    More than possible.

Ray was at his peak at WW though, and Roy would have been significantly bigger.

I can flip that and say that you are biased against him.

You still keep telling us how Roy ducked fighters, even though it's been debunked many times.

RJJ could make Triple G look silly, and dance circles around him and tee off landing bombs on him much like Canelo did. Though in fairness, Triple G would probably be the hardest puncher that Middleweight version of RJJ ever faced. The Triple G from a few years ago that fought David Lemieux for example could give an young RJJ some problems. If he could cut off the ring and catch RJJ, you never know. Maybe he could get a flash knockdown or something, but the older more shopworn version who fought Canelo I'd expect to get schooled by RJJ.

Canelo vs RJJ on the other hand would be much more of a fascinating counter punching chess match. Middleweight RJJ would have a speed advantage, but he wasn't seasoned at that point and current Middleweight Canelo has learned a few tricks of his own.

It's a fascinating match because for Triple G or Canelo vs RJJ, you're matching them up with the Middleweight version of RJJ which was still very inexperienced though supremely skilled. Canelo or Triple G vs MW RJJ would have the experience advantage, and I would say the best version of Canelo or Triple G could each give MW RJJ a tough fight. Of course it's hard to favor anyone vs RJJ, I just think you have to ask yourself how good was MW RJJ compared to SMW or LWH Prime RJJ. This would be a good question I'd like to ask Loudon when considering this matchup. I’m wondering if MW early 90s RJJ could really stop Canelo or Triple G.

I'll reply in more detail when I have some more time.

    Good post.

Just take the Tate version of Roy.

He was 25 then, and was coming off of wins over Bernard and Malinga.

That version was matured, and he fought Toney about 5/6 months later.

I don't see how either of them couldn't have beaten Roy, but Canelo would have had zero chance.

I'd give Canelo a chance, just not a good chance, because we're talking about RJJ. I mean lets take 2017 Canelo vs 1994 RJJ right before he moved up to SMW. Now, obviously I'd expect RJJ to win, but it would be interesting because Canelo is not your typical come forward fighter who's predictable. Both guys like to counter punch, both guys have power, so you really have to think what strategy would Canelo employ. It's not as simple to just say "Canelo would have zero chance”. He'd have a chance, but I'd favor RJJ just based on speed. But could he stop Canelo? I doubt it, Canelo has a hell of a chin and I think RJJ would find it hard to land on Canelo and get him into any trouble.

It would be a high speed chess match, but honestly I wouldn't count Canelo out. He may be uniquely able to give RJJ some problems, maybe he could get Roy to be a little overaggressive or overconfident and land one of those counter punch body shots that Canelo is famous for surprising and possibly hurting Roy to the body. You never know. I'm not sure RJJ had ever fought somebody with Canelo's counter punching skills. You might say Canelo would fight him like James Toney did, but we all know that wasn't the best version of James Toney he fought that night. Toney had to drop a massive amount of weight to fight Roy.

Canelo wouldn't have bit on the move he stole from a game**** like Toney Did. 2017 Canelo at MW would be far more difficult for RJJ than James Toney was. The best verison of Triple G gives RJJ some problems, but I think RJJ has an easier time with him than Canelo because Triple G's style is really suited for RJJ. Still probably goes the distance. Would like to hear your detailed breakdown when you get a chance.

And Jacobs and Canelo, but when Roy was doing it in the 90s it was pretty unique. Roy himself said he had 16 pounds on Hopkins, who was only 164.

Most hisrorical MWs being proposed put on a little after the weigh in, but nothing close to that. Roy would have at least 15 pounds on them all.
