Benn was filmed saying he didn't want to fight RJJ after McClellan because, "Why would I want to **** blood for 2 weeks again!" He was directly asked why he wouldn't fight RJJ and he directly gave his answer on film.
Calzaghe wouldn't have beaten him. He was too easy to hit and he lacked confidence. I've seen him struggle with Reid, and get dropped by guys like Byron Mitchell and Kabary Salem. I've also seen him struggle with Bika and Hopkins, even when he was still elite and he was producing the same output as he'd produced in his 20's. Roy was just the better fighter in his mid 20's. Andre was great but the speed would have been too much for him. Roy was a phenom in his prime. Again, you've mentioned the Griffin fight. You do make me laugh. You don't know what Joe would have done against Griffin at LHW. But yes, maybe he could have beaten him more convincingly than what Roy did the first time. But then again, Roy would have gone through most of Joe's opposition in his sleep.
I'll try to find the footage. Believe me, I wanted Benn to face RJJ and thought he had the potential to upset RJJ. It was the fight to be made in 1995 at 168.
Yeah, that would be good mate. I'm surprised at that. I've seen the interview that I posted many times, and I've seen old articles from 1995, where Benn seemed as though he really wanted it, but King could never reach a compromise with the Levin's. Many fighters talk smack, but Nigel was an absolute warrior. I believe that both Benn and Collins truly wanted to fight Roy. Benn faded pretty quickly though after his fight with Gerald. The post fight interview which was uploaded was either after the Nardiellio fight or the one with Perez.
Yeah his confession was some time after McClellan. Possibly after Collins and his retirement but I can't quite remember. And yes I was surprised with what Benn said. Him and Bruno are my favorite British boxers of al time.
I don't know then. If it was after Collins, he may have been in a different mindset. But he looked pretty convincing in that post fight interview.
I agree. Benn-RJJ was my third favorite SuperBout that never happened behind Tyson-Foreman and Tyson-Holyfield '91, and right in front of Bowe-Lewis. Loved both fighters and thought it would've been a better scrap than RJJ's win over Toney.
Yeah, it takes two to tango so it may well have been that Eubank didn't want to go there. Benn certainly wouldn't have backed away from the challenge as you've already said. My original point was that a fight against any one of those titlists would have been more meaningful than the defenses he had, irrespective of whether it was Jones who didn't seek them out and it might have told us a bit more about whether Jones would have been able to beat pre-supermiddleweight 168 pounder greats like Charles or Marshall.
the trouble with 168 is its only just started fleshing out. so its past has barely 2 or 3 elites at best. Andre Ward, the first true probable SMW ATG maybe. But the chasing pack of Froch, Calzaghe, Benn, Sven, Lillies, would not stand a chance. In the future, when we get ATGs apart from ward and jones, that may change.
