I remember Liam Smith pretended Canelo won that first fight at the time and it lowered my opinion of him.

The first fight wasn't close, but Golovkin dropped or KO'd everyone so since Canelo wasn't dropped or KO'd he somehow overcame Golovkin and won in the minds of fools. He wasn't the first to land eye-catching shots on Golovkin to no effect either. Everyone landed on Golovkin when he was pressure fighting.

I had both fights 8-4 to Golovkin and I agree with you. Golovkin made the mistake in thinking perhaps that the judges showed a bias to canelo because he was fighting off the backfoot in fight 1. Maybe he thought that if he did the same in the rematch he'd get the same credit that Canelo got for doing so. Unfortunately even though he even more clearly won the rematch doing so, the judges bias was towards Canelo and not any particular style.

Golovkin won both two fights clear as day - in fact the second fight was wider with Golovkin winning those rounds more clearly.

Sergio Mora had Canelo winning the first one. (Mora more recently sort of tried to walk that back, but at the time he said Canelo won) Deontay Wilder shortly after the first fight was interviewed and stated he thought Canelo won it. But most people were too scared to say Canelo won, they were influenced by the GGG hype.

Canelo should have got the decision, he outperfomed GGG throughout. GGG was so frustrated at his inability to land clean, and Canelo caught GGG with big shots several times. It was fun to watch. GGG was gifted a draw by two judges, while on the other end of the spectrum Byrd had it very wide for Canelo. The correct score is in between those two extremes, 115-113 Canelo or 116-112 Canelo. Sorry GGG fans, he deserved to lose. GGG was very fortunate to get that draw.

I thought ggg won a close clear decision 7-5 the first fight. Second was very close and could go either way. What makes it srand out is the 118-110 card whis is even worse than cj ross 114-114 vs Floyd.
But we see this all the time with cashcows and corruption.
You had this idiot gave srl 118-110 vs Hagler or Fury winning 98-92 vs mcdermott in a clearly lost fight.

I thought GGG did slightly better in the 2nd fight but he also took more punishment. He was able to land more catch Canelo with some decent shots which he couldn't do in the first fight due to Canelo's footwork and elusiveness. The problem with the rematch was GGG fell behind in the middle rounds and was losing heading into the championship rounds. (remember Sanchez saying to him in his corner's he's losing)

In the first fight GGG lost the early rounds but then started to get back into the fight in rounds 4-6, and in rounds 7-9 he started taking control of the fight despite getting hit with bombs in each of those rounds, he was outworking Canelo in those rounds. But then Canelo came on strong in rounds 10-12. In the rematch it was GGG who rallied late after clearly falling behind in the middle rounds. In the 3rd fight GGG lost almost every round until the late rounds, so he was too far behind to comeback, and didn't win each of the last 4 clearly just kept them close so he had no chance of winning the 3rd fight despite the judges trying to give him the fight.

Canelo lost the two first fights. He fought well, but he lost. Not by a mile, but still unquestionable losses. That corruption destroyed Golovkin's perfect record, because there wouldn't have been a third fight where he already lost it.

Yeah and the reaction to the first fight had a lot to do with people being outraged about the 118-110 and then trying to pretnd like it was a clear GGG win. While 118-110 was very generous for Canelo, 114-114 or 115-113 GGG was very generous to GGG. Rounds 1-4 were Canelo rounds (1 and 4 arguable for GGG but not clear by any stretch). 5 and 6 very close. 7-9 GGG but he was rocked with a big shot in each of those, still GGG rounds despite the big shot but scoring 8 or 9 to Canelo as Byrd did isn't that crazy given the big shot landed, but definitely a stretch given GGG controlled most of those rounds. 10-12 could easily each go to Canelo. Some argue 10 or 11 for GGG but definitely not clear GGG rounds. So you can find 7 or 8 rounds to Canelo, as you can find that many GGG rounds. Most rounds in the fight were close or arguable for each fighter, but in the end the draw was a good result given how close it was. Even if you thought GGG won a close fight 7-5 like you, you shouldn't have much of a problem with the draw. I saw it close but clear Canelo 7-5 or 8-4 but was OK with a draw given how close and competive it was. It's the people who argue GGG won so clear and wide that there's no argument for a draw or a Canelo win that aren't being reasonable.

We'll have to agree to disagree with that. I thought Canelo won each of the first two, but by no means were each convincing clear cut wins. They both involved a lot of close rounds that could be argued either way. More punishment was dished out in the rematch by each fighter, whereas the first fight was more of a chess match with Canelo displaying high level defense, footwork and counter punching skill. In the rematch Canelo stood right in front of him making him easier to be hit but also allowing him to inflict more damage.

Also Canelo dominated in terms of body punching in both fights which is a good reason to give him close rounds. Canelo was landing to the body and throwing a variety of punches, like hooks and uppercuts, while GGG was throwing mostly jabs and straights and barely landing to the body, Canelo's punch selection and accuraty was more impressive. It shows a higher level of skill and technique. GGG is a more basic fighter than Canelo and it showed. GGG did throw more but the punches weren't as impressive or as effective. I'd rather see a fighter throw less punches overall if they are harder more eye catching shots that hit more areas of the body.

I don’t think anyone really thinks Canelo won the first fight.

GGG fans are some of the worst and most delusional on this forum though which in turn brings the worst out in others.
