Does Anyone Else Really Dislike The Rocky Movies?!!

Rocky was having success after the knockdowns and was getting up very quickly after them.

There were the 10 title defenses between Rockys struggles in Rocky II and Rocky III. In terms of Rocky II Rocky was supposedly the first fighter to go the distance with Apollo in his entire career so the fictional boxing community would not have wanted an early stoppage in the rematch. According to the wiki the only other fighter to go 10+ rounds with Apollo is George Foreman himself. Thus the emphasis in the first movie on "going the distance".

 

Drago would have been locked up. He literally shoves the ref away and pummels Apollo for 10 more seconds and then Apollo dies.

Also, as we all know, throwing in the towel doesn’t really stop the fight in real life. Rocky standing up on the ring post with the towel in his hand IS stopping the fight. Duke would have just entered the ring to cause a DQ if he wanted to stop it that badly, rather than cry to Rocky.

The director’s cut is definitely more serious. A lot more changes than I’m used to with director’s cuts.

I like all the movies despite its implausibility, and continuity errors. Rocky’s son ages 5 years from the Drago fight until he gets off the plane to return to the US. Also, his CTE magically disappears.

 

The best boxing movie for me is Homeboy, short and very spiritual.

 

If you thought Drago was cartoonish, what was your impression of Clubber in III? This is clearly the most insanely overwrought character & acting in any film I think I’ve ever seen. Sure, it definitely has comedic value, but it doesn’t feel like they’re playing him for laughs.

 

Wait, is that canon? Foreman exists in that universe & had lost to Creed? Or did someone just make that up? We did see that Frazier exists in their world.

 

Right there with you--the first one is my 3rd favorite boxing film of all-time--(only surpassed by the 1962 production of "Requiem for a Heavyweight" starring Anthony Quinn and "Raging Bull") All of the subsequent Rocky films became more and more like action superhero comic books.

PS--The greatest song featured in ANY boxing movie was early in "Rocky I" when Rocky's all alone in his dingy apartment with this absolute masterpiece playing in the background!!

Apollo beating Foreman is the point which the Rocky canon seperates from real boxing history. Though the wiki claims a Floyd McCallum held the belt at some earlier point the lineage is otherwise the same up to Foreman.

Tyson is the only IRL HW from after that who exists in canon. He wins the belt after Rocky V presumably to avoid interacting with the films. But no details are given.

 

Let me try to get my head around this. So Creed after becoming Champ beats Foreman, presumably effectively he is Ali, then? Or is Ali in the universe, too? Just before the fight at the end of the original film, Frazier turns up (the film was released the same year he retired) & tells Creed in a possibly joking manner, “You’ve been ducking me for a long time,” to which Creed playfully replies, “You’re next, Joe,” so I don’t know how that fits in, except it implies Creed is not Ali.

 

Ali is in the universe too, he is mentioned in Rocky VI. They are seperate people. Apollo gets the shot at Foreman before Ali does, presumably earlier since Apollo has 22 title defenses by the fall of 1976. None of Apollos title defenses are against real people. By Rocky I Ali, Frazier and Foreman are presumably all out of the picture.

Rocky Marciano exists too.

 

You’re gonna make my head explode I knew none of this. Where is this coming from? In-movie sources or expanded universe? If the timeline adds up & Frazier is Frazier, he’s obviously joking then with Creed. But twenty-two defenses? That makes Creed pretty old one would think.
