Just thinking about the AJ/Wlad Rematch and the fall out from it...

Its pretty much messed things up really... AJ should be moving onto Ortiz or Pulev now instead he has a rematch with Wlad, Same with Fury.

Im not saying rematches have no place but why should they be written into contracts to happen straight away.

If a fight is good enough or a robbery the demand will be there for a rematch.

    Thoughts?

    No...
In this case it was a very good fight and a rematch would never have happened if there wasn't a clause for it, due to mandatories and Wlad being on the edge of retirement.
Then we have the Kovalev/Ward situation, which made very clear that if there hadn't been a rematch clause, the rematch probably wouldn't ever happend with Ward even trying to wiggle out of it with the clause in place. No matter the fallout after that bout.
Some of his fans actually thought that was warranted too, for some reason. Not bulging despite public outcry, somehow gives some fighters the "G" stamp instead of the chicken one.

Thats a good point actually. Didn't think about it from that fight point of view.

Its an illegal rematch. Wlad is not entitled to one.

Fury was made sign an illegal rematch clause as well. The best thing Wlad can to now is walk away once and for all.
Let AJ and the rest of the division move forwards.

Andre, don't you have to weigh in soon? They aren't gonna call the fight off now because you are alt posting on some forum.

No I think it's a good idea. It prevents fighters who have had a bad first match a second chance, and gives the fans two quality fights often times.

Nobody wants to see Joshua versus those two bums. Joshuas only true threat is Wilder and that is the fight the fans want to see.

They allow fights that would not happen otherwise to get made.

Anything can happen in boxing. For example, you don't want your opponent to win a 3 round to 2 technical decision due to an accidental headbutt, and then dodge a rematch.

rematch clauses have caused fury to go into hiding. without them he could still be fighting small powerless fighters like pajkic.

Rematch clauses should go. The Canelo rematch clause against GGG is absurd to me.

Rematches should happen (preferably after the previous for both fighters) if it was competitive (even with a stoppage) and their is genuine fan interest. Brandon Rios v Mike Alvarado 1 and 2 being a good example.

No. Rematch clauses are good as long as the losing fighter makes a decision within 2 months and the fight happens within 4-5 months. Terms of a rematch should be negotiated in with the first fight, but that makes too much sense for boxing.

That's great Dino. Could you please provide a link to any statute, regulation or court case that would render those contract clauses "illegal" (your term) or even just legally unenforceable? Only one example would be good and to make it easy you can pick any country in the world. There are 195 independent countries from which to choose.
