Does anyone else think the stoppage in Pacquiao-Cotto was premature and wrong ?

I think refs should make more stoppages in fights like this one. It would prevent travesty decisions like Guzman/Funeka 1.

2minutes is a long time when you are in that state, too tired to defend yourself and too battered.

Id have preffered to see if Pac can do it without the aid of the ref but the stoppage from a boxing safety pov was good.

Whats the point in some poor ****er who's clearly on his last legs take another head shot just for the sake of dignity????!!!!! ****in moron thread:-(

  5. It was such a beatdown that Pacquiao looked like he actually didn't want to hurt Cotto anymore. The stoppage was the opposite of premature.

No, should have been stopped earlier. Pac was taking it easy on him.

It shoulda been stopped around the 9th. I think considering the magnitude of the fight and the fighters, kenny bayless was giving cotto the oppurtunity to go out like a champ.

No, Bayless should have stopped it a lot sooner than the 12th...Cotto was getting hit way to much IMO...Bayless probably wanted to see if Cotto could fight back given that he let the fight go on the 12th...It was not a premature stoppage...if anything, the stoppage was long overdue.

I can see how the fight ending in an on-record TKO instead of a decision bothers you considering the circumstances and lateness of the fight, but health-wise it should have been stopped sooner.

The question I was asking...how the hell was Cotto still standing?

besides everything that has been said,

Pacquiao deserved his KO victory more than Cotto losing a UD

I think a stoppage sooner would have been justified but I somewhat agree with the thread starter in that the ref had ample opportunities to stop it earlier but let him go all the way til the 12 before stopping it. Why not just let him finish. If you were trying to do him a favor or protect his well being it should have been stopped sooner. If you let him reach the 12 and he and his corner haven't quit, which I thought the corner should have stepped in, then let him finish. It was clear that was his goal at that point.

Cotto couldn't hold his guard up. Therefore, he couldn't defend himself. Regardless of damage inflicted, that's a stoppage.

It's one of those things like if you get up from a knockdown and fall back to the canvas before the mandatory eight is finished; unless it's Joe Cortez, any world-class referee is smart enough to know that they have no choice.

Even if you're mentally willing, if the body concedes and can't control its own limbs, you are KTFO. It's the same whether you're standing up or laying down. (Or using the ropes as a hammock and your legs still buckle.)
