The more I read about Langford, I believe that he's probably the #1...but it could also be Armstrong as well. Not really sure.

i go with greb, but armstrong can be rated 1 easily.

charles can only be over greb based on getting the hw belt imo, which is a weak argument.

fitz is harder to rank imo, how ill/shot/good was dempsey? what did the jeffries fights look like? top 10, yes, top 5, probably, #1, not quite for me.

gans/leonard. great fighters but a bit below the others because they didn't move up as far or as well.

I don't really have a p4p #1, but you could make arguments for any of those guys.

I recall a number of years back seeing a reprint of a '40's 'Ring' article asking whether Sugar Ray Robinson should be considered the alltime p4p. Seemed like his main rivals for consideration were Gans and B. Leonard. They asked Frank Erne his opinion -- he thought SRR rated over those lightweights.

I agree. A case can be made for all of them.

i don't think it's possible to make a good case for leonard being the #1

Hey Burt, it wasn't me that coined the phrase. I was just explaining its origin. On your criteria I do believe SRR was a better box / fighter than Joe Louis ( at Heavy ) at either WW, or Middle. I firmly believe he was and will be for a very long time to come the best fighter ever to grace a ring. And that is no mean feat when you are mixing in the company named in this thread.

Similar to guilalah, I shy from rating fighter's as they each have different selling points. Trying to squeeze them into the same box is difficult.

Fitzsimmons might just have the most impressive weight-hopping feats, going from middle to heavy and doing serious damage.

Gans demonstrated a blend of precision and endurance that make him probably the most dangerous lightweight of all time.

Armstrong hoovered up titles in quick succession, against superb opposition, and often while weighing under.

Leonard may have the most impressive campaign ever at a single weight, re-matching and hog-tying a variety of styles.
