Norton should of got a RM, just because of how good a fight it was, it would of done Holmes resume a nice lift. (as if it needs a lift haha)

It was a very close fight. Holmes did just enough to take it,imo. I predicted a Holmes win beforehand.

Very close fight, could have gone either way imo when you factor in the fact that the judges had it even going into the 15th. I've watched the 15th round many times and I feel a case could be made for either winning it, depending on whether you like Ken's work in the first 2.30, or Larry's work in the last 30...

Not a robbery though...Lewis-Holy 1 was the definition of a robbery, not Holmes-Norton. Agreed that Ken should have got an immediate rematch, but I feel Holmes would have won a rematch more clearly...not easily, but clearly nonetheless imo...the experience of the 1st fight would have stood Holmes in good stead, whereas I feel Norton would just have been one war older...

I am pretty certain of one thing though...if Ali had been Norton that night, Holmes would not have got the decision...

I don't think anyone would have complained with a DRAW,,,,,,,,with that June 1978 bout.

Setting up a rematch for the early-fall of 1978.

These were the 'Two Best Heavyweights' out there at this time, no doubt.

Who knows, there may even have been a 'Third Match' for 1979.

    Senor Pepe,
I must say that a draw is a great shout...truth is, probably neither deserved to lose & the public certainly deserved a second helping...

Holmes-Norton was the finale of great heavy bouts of the seventies. It started with the FOTC and ended with the one we're discussing. What a decade,eh ?

Norton had a bit of a hard luck career ...

He was not robbed but it clearly could have gone either way and likely should have been a draw ... it was an extremely close, give and take fight with many shifts of momentum ..

He should have gotten a draw in the second Ali fight as he dominated almost the entire second half of the fight ..

His first title fight came against Foreman, possibly the all time worst match up for him of champions ..

He was clearly robbed in the Ali rematch..

He was forced to fight another terrible style match up in Shavers in an eliminator which blew away his chances of a Holmes rematch ... why in the world did the alphabets force such a fight and why did his management allow it ?

He could have been managed and handled better ..

Re the Ali - Norton fights. I've always scored the second one for Muhammad and the third for Ken.

I reckon the Norton-Shavers elimination suited Larry. He knew the former would always give him hell while he already knew that he could easily beat the latter.

Only someone that hasn`t seen the fight & has been listening to old wives tales will tell you Norton was robbed... Holmes outboxed him for the majority of 12 rounds & they went to war in rounds 13-15... 3 great back & forth rounds that made a very decent fight into a great one... not a close one but a great one.

Holmes won the fight clearly regardless of one judges head being on planet pluto at the time of the fight.

The thought was and has been...for some people...that Norton won...but because Holmes was linked to Don King...Holmes was awarded the decision...GREAT 15th round...

    No, he did not.

Ali swept the first 5 rounds by sticking, moving & outboxing Norton... Norton then made Ali swap punches (& rounds) with him from 6-12... Norton won some of the late rounds, as did Ali... the first 5 rounds won by Ali is what won him the fight, Norton took too long to catch up to Ali & make him fight..... Ali won this fight, no doubt.

Ali-Norton II was not unlike Holmes-Norton in this respect. I felt Muhammad won round 12 far more clearly than Larry might have won round 15. Give Ali the opening five round sweep of Norton II, and round 12, then the best Ken could hope for mathematically with scoring on a rounds basis is a draw. Did Norton sweep rounds six to 11? Because if just one of those six rounds is even a draw, then Muhammad deserves the win.

this alone is the single best post on the scoring of the 2nd norton fight. to score it for norton, you have to magically discount rounds ali won. a fair and objective analysis makes this almost impossible.
