I believe I read somewhere that Jim Jeffries took some time to travel through Europe and put on exhibitions. I could probably do a search, but it would also defeat the purpose of creating discussion. Does anyone know which countries he visited, who he fought, and if there were any interesting stories that happened on the tour?
Hallo Mr. Magoo, are You sure, that Jeffries made such a tour through Europe? I know, that Jack Dempsey travelled through Europe and had a sparring-session with young Max Schmeling.
It seems strange that no information about Jeffries European tour is forth coming.Jack Johnson gave exhibitions and fought in a park just a mile from me,and that is well documented .Yet Jeffries tour is alluded to in every mini biography ,but without any details .Can we be sure it took place ? Maybe Adam Pollack can enlighten us?
Jeffries went on tour to Eruope after he won the title From Fitzsimmons in 1899. He is reporter to have KO'd a dozen men in a take on all comers type of tour.
He boxed a few exhibitions in Ireland with his own partners and declined to box a local because he felt he wasn't up to standard. He also boxed in the UK. One contest there was with a local called Morris whom he outclassed. I dont think Jeff was on a ko type tour, barnstorming a la Maher or Sullivan, but rather picking up handy money for easy exhibitions, generally with his own sparring partners.
In www.cyberboxingzone.com there is good information about Jeffries`record. He was indeed in Europe and fought versus Ed Dunkhorst and George Chrisp in exhibitions.
This is what they say about his tour of England in 1900. "Due to early day reports, there is much question as to whether some bouts were exhibitions or actual wins; The knockouts in England during 1900 are not included in his statistics"
