Does anyone here think that Larry Holmes is sometimes underappreciated?

Larry followed in Muhammed's footsteps, but here on the Classic-and by other true boxing fans-he gets his just due. He's one of the greatest heavyweights ever-I personally have him in the top 4.His only problem was his putting his foot in his mouth at inappropriate moments.

If Ali had to face a Larry Holmes in 1967 or 1975, we'd be looking at both
    Ali and Holmes differently.

Holmes had the perfect 'mirror' style to beat Ali at any time during his career.
A 'big puncher' style was not the way to defeat Ali.

Which wins did Larry have that make you think he would beat Ali?

Ali didn't beat a boxer of Larry's quality, but he did convincingly beat skillful boxers like Liston, Patterson, Folley and Ellis as well as pretty skilled and good tall jabbers like Terrell and Bugner. Which is the best boxers Larry beat? Green versions of Carl Williams and Witherspoon?

You can never really know about these things, but Larry has little in his record to show that he would beat someone like Ali. Stylistically, I think his vulnerability to rights is bad news in this match-up as well.

Ali 67' would certainly beat Holmes.
75' Ali would still outbox Holmes, as Holmes would be too green and wouldn't have the smarts to take advantage of a slowed Ali.
