Does anyone here think that Larry Holmes is sometimes underappreciated?

Come on now, it wasn't like Ali was so dominant in every fight.

For 'God's Sake', even 'soft-punching Karl Mildenberger was making Ali back track back in 1966.
What was Mildenberger 6' 0" and 195 lbs.
The guy had only (4 KO's) in his previous 27 fights.

Ali never ever fought anyone close to Holmes, in the jab-eating contest'.
How would have Ali adjusted, after eating some of Holmes 'piston like' jabs.

 

how will holmes react to ali's better jab, better chin, better right cross, faster hands and feet ??

He would probably ask Ken Norton. Seems like Ken never had a problem with
all of Ali's arsenal.
If you check out each of Ali-Norton fights without any bias, you would have to agree,
Norton won all (3) fights.

 

norton never faced a prime ali, and norton never won the 3 fights, ali won the second.and this fight was past prime ali vs prime norton, ali 70s was not even close to the best ali. larry holmes fought wars against past prime norton,past prime shavers,spoon,smith,berbick, weaver,cooney... prime ali would beat holmes any day of the week. he was faster with hands and feet, he had better chin, more stamina, more heart, better reflexes, he was smarter, he had more confidence. holmes was a pathetic bad copy of ali

 

Not in the slightest bit underrated. He's one of the forums darlings. Its irony en mass when people claim he is underrated, because almost everybody on the forum claims he is underrated and almost everybody also picks him over any heavyweight other than Ali, wilse ranking him unanimously a top 3-5 Heavyweight.

Holmes jab is compared to things such as a Montreal and MW Duran, in terms of being overpowered

 

Simple fact remains that Ali beat far more guys closer to Holmes in quality than Holmes beat guys close to Ali in quality.

The difference in quality is more than big. Which was Holmes best scalp? Aging Norton, Cooney or Mercer? These guys were good contenders, but no Listons, Pattersons, Fraziers or Foremans.

Ali proved that he could deal with very good boxers, great punchers and great brawlers. Holmes just never showed that superiorty over such range and quality of opposition. In my mind, he doesn't have a single perfomance that shows he could beat prime Ali. That doesn't mean he couldn't, but it doesn't seem too likely.

 

norton didn't fight a peak ali.i'm not biased towards ali, there are a lot of heavyweights who i prefer to ali, liston for one, but you have to say, ali is at worst the 2nd best heavy of all time

 

Holmes is hardly ever even seen outside the top 5.

If anything he's a tad over rated, there's a handful of fighters even after Ali and Louis that can be rated as high or higher.

 

People keep referring the young Ali.
But lets look at his fight resume, not including Liston.

Now is anybody telling me that this 'list' is dominating.
Even Ring Magazine stated back then that this was a soft list.
They asked Ali, just when would he be fighting someone?

Just who on that list would have given Holmes any trouble.

 

Holmes is clearly NOT underappreciated.
Most of this forum has him up in the top 5, often top 3, of all-time heavyweights.

I'm not sure about where I'd rank him. Certainly he's among the top 20 heavyweights ever. He was great.

 

Well how the **** can you just decide to "not count Liston" ?

Even without counting Liston you have a hall of famer in Floyd Patterson, a very tough to beat Ernie Terrell who is better than pretty much everyone Holmes ever beat with the possible exceptions of Spoon and Norton, and then very quality contenders in Folley, Chuvalo, and Cooper. The rest of those fighters are about on par with half of Holmes title defenses anyway.
