I'm trying to get into training more than into actually competing - do any of you know of any books or dvds or internet resources that would give me a good training plan to follow for weights and exercises and diet? Specifically weights to build strength and improve upper body physique. Cheers

To be honest the internet is heaving with workout tips for combat sports and/or fitness but if youre conceredn with upperbody and if you're just starting out you can't beat sit up and press ups to get you going.

And I am actually a personal trainer !

Can you help with any diet tips Govanmauler?

Havent been the gym for quite a while but I'm competing in a 5k this weekend and I'm aiming for a time of around 22mins given that I've been inactive for a while. But what would you recommend eating the days leading up to and day of the race?

Firstly good on you , a lot of people find it too hard to get started again but going straight into a 5k is one way to get back to it !

Carbs (eaten with some protien ) and hydration are what you really need to concentrate on. Forcing yourself to eat the day of the run ( you'd be amazed how many dont ! ) is important too

This site has some pretty good dos and donts

Box Like the Pro's by Joe Frazier is a beauty. Get's you working hard at fundmentals, stressing floor excersises. Plus, it's Joe Frzier so you know it's gonna be good.

This is a great book , pretty hardcore , but a great book.

One of Joes greatest strengths was his beleif in the imporatnce of roadwork. Many folks jump straight into weight training without ever considering doing the cardio too. One without the other gives you lesser results

    Nice one!

My boxing diet mainly consisted of water and apples as I struggled with weight. Trying to bring my weight down slowly over the next 12 months and then get back in the gym and figure that some competitive running will probably be the best way to do.

I've checked out those tips and they're really useful! Thanks again

What is the weights section in it like?

Does anyone have any more suggestions other than the Frazier book? As I said, I want to concentrate primarily on building strength (specifically biceps) and improving my upper body via weights.

    Harsh but true !

however if you are desperate to work your arms , its your triceps you need to worry about not your biceps

Big triceps = Big arms ( not big biceps )

and I dont mean to be rude but if your age on the CP is true building huge lumps of muscle is gonna be really hard.

Huge muscles are a waste though , strong doesn't need to be uber pumped

Oh well if big arms is your goal , you need to work the triceps

Dips, reverse curls (sometime called a french press) and skull crushers they all work the triceps. You need to warm up properlyand maybe even strap the elbow though ( especially if you go for the reverse curls )

Hammer curls and preacher curls for the biceps.

Pull ups are great too but you REAALLY have to go to full extension on each rep none of this barely moving pish I see people doing

To be honest the are litteraly hundreds of "big arm" workouts out there on t'internet so take your pick really and see what works for you

remeber though if you're looking to bulk up you need to get some protien into you ( preferably within half an hour of finishing and maybe even one in the morning too ).

    Good luck !
