Does anyone know what Bernard Hopkins and James Toney think of each other?

They are two of my favourite fighters, two superbly talented boxers, two huge characters in boxing. Does anyone know what the relationship between them is? Are they friends? Do they rate each other, respect each other, admire each other? Or has there been trash-talking in the past? Are they enemies, do they run each other down, do they not rate each other very highly?

A friend told me he read somewhere recently that Hopkins said in an interview that Joe Calzaghe lacks the skills to defeat opponents in the way James Toney does. I don't even know if he did actually say this, but that's the only time I've read either one refer to the other.

Can anyone shed some light on the Hopkins-Toney dynamic, if there even is one?

They were set to fight a few years back, but negotiations fell through I believe.

I think that they respect each other's skills but don't like each other very much and both guys think that they are the better man. There was a lot of trash talk a few years back when there was a fight proposed between them

yeah the proposed fight was set to take place at cruiser i believe in around 2003 (i think), it even made the front page of the ring mag.

i'm pretty sure i've read some less than flattering comments by toney about hopkins somewhere down the line.

i'm sure ESB legend jack presscot will be along to add his 2 cents soon...

I can't see how Hopkins could have jumped from 160lbs up to 190-200lbs just for one fight, that's physically not viable for him. A leap of 30-40lbs at 38 years old just wouldn't happen without physical damage even worse than afflicted RJJ after his heavyweight jump and return. The Toney would beat Jirov would've been far too strong for B-Hop at that weight.

I'm hoping someone has a link for an interview or something where they discuss each other. Do you remember anything specific about these less than flattering comments mate?

not particularly. i think it was just the usual james toney *****, yo, mother****er, manhood, whoop, beat his ass etc. interview that he gives about most fighters when their names crop up, nothing groundbreaking from lights out. those two are bound to rub each other up the wrong way.

there was certainly a catchweight involved in the discussions but i'm 99.9% sure it was above the light heavyweight limit. i have no idea why the fight was never pulled off. shame, it's one of my ultimate fantasy matchups.

Toney spoke about Bernard in an interview before Rahman II,and said:''Everybody says that Bernard Hopkins is old school, wrong,I'm the only old school fighter outhere''.
That is all I can think of now

Mine too. 1991-1994 middleweight James Toney v 1997-2001 middleweight Bernard Hopkins, I can't imagine many fights I'd rather see. Even if it wasn't thrilling, it would be fascinating.
