Because we haven't had a Marciano thread in 1-2 days. I flat out do not believe that there was any realistic chance that he would have lost had he 1-2 more fights. The four potential opponents I most often hear mentioned are Nino Valdez, Bob Baker, Bob Satterfield, and Freudian Floyd Patterson himself. We will throw in Hurricane Jackson. If anyone disagrees with my picks, please vote "other" and explain who was realistically on deck that might have beaten the Rock. Vote for as many as you want. Nino Valdez- a big, strong guy who had little talent for the sport and admittedly no killer instinct. Beaten in his career by LHWs and even a couple of bums. Would have had to have dug deep and fought a better fight than he ever fought for even a chance. Bob Baker- a very talented guy with very little power. Marciano would have done what he always does to boxers, and chopped him down. No chance whatsoever. Not on his best day is there a path to victory. Patterson/Satterfield- both big punchers themselves, but frail. Patterson's speed would have maybe given him some outside chance, but to my thinking, he is not in the game. Hurricane Jackson- a swarmer without the same power as Marciano. Would have been utterly rolled. For the record, the ring magazine ratings for '55 were: Archie Moore Bob Baker Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson John Holman Willie Pastrano Nino Valdes Johnny Summerlin Bob Satterfield Young Jack Johnson Ezzard Charles Ring magazine ratings for '56 were Floyd Patterson, Champion Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson Archie Moore Harold Carter Willie Pastrano Eddie Machen Bob Satterfield Ingemar Johansson Bob Baker Zora Folley Wayne Bethea
I think Rocky could have managed a couple of more fights without a loss. The emergence of Liston would have been the signal to retire, imo
I also suspect he would have managed 1-2 more wins, but given his style, he was going to start looking his boxing age. Patterson would have been very interesting.
patterson handspeed would have been an issue for post prime rocky, if he caught up, it would take a while.
I think there's a pretty good chance Patterson would have beaten him. I think Marciano is undeniably great and better than Patterson but he timed his retirement perfectly and his reputation has definitely benefitted from that.
Depends, his back had issues near the end. Rocky himself said he had 1-2 more fights left in him. Patterson could have beaten Rocky in 1957 or 1958
Marciano would have cleaned up what was left and Patterson would have stayed in the lightheavyweight division, Cus was too wise to have him fight Marciano too much power and too much pressure. Floyd later advanced in his ability and experience but could never beat a Marciano, a Frazier, a Liston, a Louis or a Tyson or a Dempsey. Nino Valdes was already dominated & dropped for a 9 count by 5"10 Bob Satterfeild, Baker KO'd by Archie Moore. A few money fights like Willie Pastrano and possibly a few that poked their heads into the top 10 at the time but I dont think any would have much of a chance. However with Marciano's style and training regimin and injuries, plus getting robbed by Al Weil it would be hard for him to mantain that condition so I see Marciano getting out by the time he hits 35 or he would eventually come up short. Liston was inactive in 56 in didnt come back untill 2 years and 5 days later into 1958 and started to move up in 58 and 59 and didnt get a title fight until 1962 so I can not see Marciano being around in 58 -63 era, Rockys last fight was in 1955 so if the money was right he may stick around another 3 years 5 fights or so the most after that even with weak competition he would be frazzled IMO and could lose but had the money been right Marciano could have easily racked up another 5-6 fights fight 2x a year and retiring with a 54-0 record with 50-51 KO's but deep into 1958 would be a stretch
Patterson as much as I admire him ,doesn't fill me with Hope ,if he'd taken on Marciano in his first title shot .Wasn't Floyd getting tagged by old Archie even ?The more mature version of Floyd beat s Rock imo.
Marciano's injuries and hatred of his manager would **** with his training too much to beat Patterson after '56. If he had the fight immediately after the Moore fight, he'd win. But if he fought guys like Valdes and Satterfield beforehand, he'd likely come into the fight out of condition and be outpointed by Patterson, unless he managed to find suzie q, even when out of shape
Possible, but I'd wager somewhere around the 12th round Floyd would get caught and hit the canvas , then a couple of knockdowns later it's over
Marciano could have defended against Olympic Champ Pete Rademacher in early Spring 1957. (just putting into perspective how ludicrous the real life Patterson vs Rademacher fight really was, with Patterson hitting the deck too).
