Remember Kid Akeem Anifawashe.. He was a Nigerian National who moved to Las Vegas in the 80's and fought Robert Quiroga in a tough fight.. A year later Akeem passed away because of complications caused by a visit to an African Shamen who prescribed a very odd blood transfusion leaving Akeem with onlt a few pints of blood in his body.. A very sad tale .... He actually was a very good quality fighter.. Any reccollections..?

    God Bless..:good

akeem is probably the tallest and rangiest jr. bantam fighter i've ever seen.

  6. Yes i remember him:yep if memeory serves me correct he fought Quiroga waaaaaaay back in 91:huh both men almost died in that brutal fight, it was very hot and here in my hometown of Vegas, that fight should have been stopped sooner, Akeem might have possibly lived longer?:verysad
I believe Quiroga is dead now also:huh im not 100% on that but i think he died a few years ago?? possibly murdered??

Kid Akeem was very very good. I actually think he might have won the fight with Quiroga (which was one of the best that I've ever seen). Great right hand that seemed to produce cartoonish knockdowns, and a really crips jab. had the potential to be a real star, I think, had he not suffered the injuries against Roberto.

And, yeah, Quiroga was never the same fighter either...and was murdered as well a couple of years ago.

Quiroga was killed in 2004. He was indeed stabbed to death. I believe that his murder has never been solved. Here's a link to his website:

    www.robertquiroga.org/bio.php

I remember the fight between Anofawashe and him, watched it live on ESPN or one of those stations. Great fight. Akeem collapsed in the ring afterward, and had to be taken to the hospital for brain surgery. My recollection is that it was a close fight, and that Quiroga deservedly got the verdict.

Supposedly Anafowashe died after either competing in a boxing match in Nigeria, and then collapsed and died in the shower. The injury he received in the Quiroga match is thought to be related.

Yeah BigCat, funny you mention him as this week in Australia they had one of his fights on a boxing ko program which jogged my memory to the extent that I was on BoxRec checking out his record. A sad end, RIP.
