I used to know a heavyweight from kentucky in the 90s, he was john Big red Morton, he was a sparring partner at the time for Greg Page and Tony Tucker.. I heard recently that he died in 1997. I never heard this... Anyone remember him..?

Only time I have heard about him, was when he was the comeback opponent of Michael Dokes, back in the early 90 s....

He fought Dokes in 91, his first fight after almost getting killed by Ruddock. Morton had his own auto business. One day he had an argument with a customer WHO later returned with a gun and killed Morton with several gunshot. He was only 34..Sad way to go :-(

I knew John but never got a real story off anyone how he died... I found some old photos of him just the other day.... He was tough and from what I found out off friends,, he beat Dokes, but mike had a name and got the decision,. I met john when he was a paid sparring guy for Don King,,

Sad to hear that he's passed. But yes. John Morton was a trialhorse that I saw fight semi-regularly growing up. I remember his fight with Bruce Seldon around 1990. John was a bloody mess by the time it was over.

Sorry my bad, I never heard of this cat, too bad some coward took his life, at only 34:-(, he must have been a rugged dude, to have beaten Dokes, and a former sparring partner for Morrison...

I saw him fight in Boston one time, from ringside. I'm too lazy to look it up right now...might have been Nate Tubbs. Anyway, the guy was competitive and appeared dangerous for a couple of rounds, but was clearly out of condition, gassed, and took a beating after that.

Yeah that's him. He was a build up guy for a lot of prospects back in the day. Didn't realize he's already been gone 18 years.

I'm late to the this post, but the information provided is true he was murdered in 1997 and no one was ever charged with it... I would love to see the pictures you spoke of... He's my father.

Can I ask how his life was ended?

Someone above was correct... He worked at the family towing company and got into an argument with a customer about the price of a tire (I was told) the customer came back and shot him. He died in surgery. I was 14... And received the information after he'd died.

Someone's life for the price of a tyre? I feel for you. That's desperate.
