Does anyone still have Dempsey as a top ten heavy? Top 15?

Look. I am talking the fight which actually is on film, not some abstraction. I know someone like Ali can carry his hands low and be hard to hit. But Dempsey was not that hard to hit.

"How we score a near 100 year old fight with modern eyes is irrelevant"

And how were the Tunney-Dempsey fights scored in 1926 and 1927? I am under the impression Tunney won. Plus your judgments, like those of everyone else on this thread, are also through modern eyes.

Making claims based upon your scoring of a fight that occurred nearly 100 years ago accomplishes what exactly?

I posted the actual audio of the fight and the commentary from ringside is an even fight up until rounds 6-8. Both fighters unmarked until late in the bout aside from welts on Tunneys body.

So the fight was not the terribly one sided affair most think of when this bout is mentioned.

The audio is a real glimpse into the past, 1927. Suggest you take the time to listen to it. I’ve been watching Dempsey Tunney 3 since the early 1970’s. This audio added significantly to my knowledge of this bout.

That’s Dempsey Tunney 2 not 3 of course.

If your knowledge of Dempsey provides the notion that “Dempsey was not that difficult to hit” you need to really start deep diving.

Here are excerpts from the UPI next day report--September 23, 1927

"Tunney won decisively on the basis of points."

"The Dempsey rally in the seventh round came unexpectedly, after the former champion had failed miserably to show his old-time form."

"The first five rounds were almost a replica of the first five at Philadelphia last year."

"In the fourth . . . Tunney opened up on the former champion and landed two hard rights which shook Dempsey and three more straight to the jaw which left Jack groggy. He was hanging on at the bell."

"By the fifth, Dempsey was slowing up. He landed a few good blows but failed to follow up. Tunney landed regularly."

This report gives Dempsey the sixth, which I had competitive, but narrowly to Tunney, and of course the seventh.

Tunney then comes on to dominate the last three rounds with Dempsey tired and bleeding from both eyes.

    And the conclusions:

"Another round or two could hardly have failed to end with Dempsey knocked out."

"Tunney had a clear majority of rounds in the opinion of virtually all observers."

There is no direct score given, but it seems to be 8-2 in rounds, or about 97-92 in points.

All very close to how I saw it on the film.

*What would be of interest to me is the actual judges' scorecards. I have not been able to find those.

Tunney hit Dempsey all night so Dempsey was relatively easy for Tunney to hit.

Tunney said Dempsey was hard to catch anywhere vulnerable.

Right you are. Dempsey didn't have good defense of film, and off it in print. Yes ,he was KO in 1 round by Flynn, out worked and out maneuvered by the Meehan and drew too may times to count. Okay I looked it up he drew 8 times. And lost six. Does this sound like a man with good defense? Nope.

Fast hands and power Dempsey had. Defense he did not! Modern eyes and old mystical tales ( stories ) often don't often see eye to eye. Lucky we have easily viewable film. This was not the case 100-40 years ago, they didn't have the internet. Still it appears to some view him with modern day misty eyes are argue against the films! Film doesn't lie.

Please post the film of Dempsey Sharkey where Sharkey is hit to his balls during the three right hands to his body that just precedes the ko blow.

The ref stated they were not low. Low blows were illegal in 1927. Note that Dempsey was not disqualified. Why? There was no evidence that Dempsey struck low with those three body blows. Neither the ref nor the doctor assigned to the fight saw any signs that those blows were low or low enough to hit Sharkeys balls.

You offer no new information. Listen to the original audio of the fight and learn something.

Not all films are for reposting or in a format for me to post to the web. Other posters here have the film ( not they you tube highlights ). The blows were low enough for Sharkey to show visible effects form the blow. The ref did not dock a point from Dempsey and allowed the actions.

Sharkey visiably complained and Jack too the opportunity to deliver a hook to the jaw. Very unsportsmanlike like! Sharkey was in the lead during the fight, don't you agree on your card? Or can't you admit this because 1) You a blind homer type if fan, or 2 ) don't have a viewable compete film.

I don't care about the official judges cards, which you and quoting. Two of them had no business scoring that fight. Dempsey won at best 2 rounds of six. Dempsey was by his own admission fearing he would be stopped and fouled a few times.

Again read the link I posted here, other posters commented on it in the past. They are clear low blows, Perhaps someone can up load the film for all of us to view then you can as pull a Houdini and disappear.

    Merry Christmas..
