Does anyone *strongly* disagree with SRL right under Ali on an ATG list?

I disagree but not too highly. I think both are outside the top 10 but in the top 15 and Ali is slightly better than Leonard.

I guess you agree that Leonard beating Hearns was NOT the "dethroning the reigning champion" then.

No matter where they are, I'd have to stick Duran between them.

I cannot in all honesty see how anyone can rate an Ali over Sugar Ray Leonard in individual talent. As a WW Leonard boxed as well as Ali, hit much sharper than Ali, was as clever as Ali without the showboating.
Furthermore Leonard in defeating the great MW Hagler, surpassed anything Ali ever did. Ray Leonard had everything but longevity...

I don't think its unreasonable at all

    Both men were gold medalists

Both men defeated great fighters who they weren't supposed to beat

Both men returned from prolonged periods of inactivity to score collosal upsets

Both men were rarely beaten when at or near prime..

I don't see much difference between the two.

educating your ignorant mind is beyond my abilites and resources , but i can tell u this : if Ali's a top 10 it makes Douglas Jones , Joe Frazier , George Chuvalo and Harold Johnson what ? d goat , his viceroy , his replacement and his chief of staff ?

    Nice exercise.

He still beat three reigning, Lineal/RING Champs (Benitez, Kalule, Hagler) without having lost to them prior to that. While Hearns could be considered a paper champ, he's still the best win on SRL's resume taking into consideration the point at which he fought him [32-0, 30 KO], his physical attributes, boxing skill and tremendous power not to mention he was favored to win, was winning and it took something extra for Leonard to pull through.

Now frankenfrank will run in and talk weight drain. I'm so sorry. This was not a catchweight bout, it was a contest at 147 lbs, the only weight class in which Hearns had fought as a professional up to that point and Hearns came in 2 under. Thomas was OK and boxed masterfully. His gassing had as much to do with never being taken into such deep waters having been so thoroughly dominant (93.7 KO%) as it did the weight. Was he fast outgrowing the division? Yes, he was. Does Leonard get full credit? Yes, he should.

I don't think it is unreasonable, although personally I wouldn't put either one in my top 10. I do have a Leonard in my top 10, but it is not Sugar. I have not really done a list in about 2 years to be fair, but I believe I had Ali at 11 or 12 and SRL in the 15-20 range. To a degree we are splitting hairs at this point, so again, although I think that is a bit high for both of them, it certainly is not unreasonable or undefendable.

If duran, benitez, hagler, hearns are so highly rated. Then surely leonard beating all 4 means his resume must be at least top 15, not to mention his h2h capabilities.

I have more distance, I have Ali at 7 and Leonard at 15 ish. But if Ali was say, 11 and Leonard was 12 i don't think that's a disaster, no.

I think it makes more sense to have Leonard one space higher, than vice versa, but i'm not fussed.
