Does anyone think that maybe the Ortiz fight took a lot out of Wilder?

Sorry I know there are already a lot of topics on the fight but I haven't seen this thought brought up.

Think about it, Wilder is 33 he is not that young the Ortiz fight could have taken a lot out of him. He is not as young as AJ where he could recover from the fire fight with Klitchko.
Yes the Ortiz fight showed Wilder has heart and he gained respect but at what cost?

Wilder has made a lot of easy defenses of his title and now this will be the next toughest opponent in a row. Wilder has made what 7 defenses? He may not be good enough to have many more, a lot of champions lose their title long before their 8th defense.
This makes me think that even though Fury may not be at his best it still could be enough to get the win.

    Thoughts?

Perhaps but put it this way - it won’t nearly have taken as much out of him as Tyson’s 2 year binge and then weight loss.. and I say that as a Fury fan.

The age thing gets overstated I think. He’s an elite athlete in fantastic condition - the Klitschko brothers remained in great shape and competed at an elite level until 40.

Wilder has had a fairly easy career besides Ortiz so I don’t think it’ll have that much effect.

No. That was not the kind of fight that takes years out of a man.

It's a grueling endurance fight and accumulation of punches in a single match that takes a serious and immediate toll.

Wilder vs. Ortiz was definitely not that kind of fight. Not at all.

Remember Wilder started Boxing at age 20 so he dosent have a lot wear and tear on him. Also Boxers tend to age a lot better than they used to.

If anything it added knowing and exp for him I doubt he’s depreciated physically. The tactical aspect of his game should have gained from that fight. Fury has his hands full however I don’t expect fury to lose any aforementioned strategic advantages. It’s a very 50/50 fight.

When do you think his rotor cuffs will start to give him trouble?

Each missed hayemaker must put incredible strain on those things.

I don't think so. Boxing is usually mental and Wilder is still fresh and motivated. Hearns had a tough fight with Kinchen in 1988 and I don't think it was close, but some people think some of the rounds like 4 and 8 he took a lot of punishment which declined him, he won the fight in the end. And then had some betterfights later against Leonard and Hill. If Wilder loses it is because he commits to his punches and leaves himself open, and Fury is a quick guy who can counterpunch. I think he could knock Wilder out.

They don't have the same opposition they did before. That helps. The top level is smaller and the space between that top and the next level is bigger. Fighters are not as developed as they were in the 1970s and 1980s. Probably because of the amatuer ranks.

I don't want to hear excuses from either side. Both are young and in their prime.

Wilder was buzzed in one round and recovered well against Ortiz and that is it really. It wasnt a fight where he was being beaten around the ring and was holding on for dear life.

He probably took more damage from that sparring session with Wlad where he was dropped twice.

Wilder is very fresh. He has taken any beatings in a professional boxing ring.

I think it made him a better fighter actually and solid experience for any future southpaws he fights.
