If so does it really improve your flexibilty. Im fairly flexible now but im hoping I can gain alittle more to help improve my BJJ skills. Im not looking to become like BJ Penn or anythingi m just curious if the **** helps.
It probably does help with flexibility, but there are non lame/gay ways to increasing flexibility than this Americanized fake ass yoga..
Any tips on what I can do ? Ever since I started rolling at a real academy a few months ago BJJ has become my life and I just wanna continue to improve. Agian im told by most at my gym im pretty flexible but im sure I could be a tad bit more.
Stretching in the morning, for 20mins or so, is the most important. Im 215 i can put both legs behind me neck. You don't need yoga.
My big beef with, "yoga classes." Is that, "yoga" is a practice of Hinduism not limited to the stretching and flexibility.. Supposed to help you attain the, "no self" by helping you detatch from your body and sort of transcend, without getting too far into it.. Sure, it helps to focus, but you don't need a fake ass, "Yogi" who doesn't know **** about, "Yoga" to teach you how to focus or how to stretch. Focus on the stretching taught at your academy.. If you wish, take a yoga class if being around people motivates you and that is all that is available. But once you start hearing your very anglo, granola bar gobbling, "Yogi" with his degree from Humbolt California talk about Chakra.. Do yourself a favor and armbar his ass, then tell him to shut the **** up.
Nice, he practices asanas. Thats not really yoga. atsch All I'm really saying is, its ****ing pretentious. The stretches, postures, focus practice is all great, but its only an aspect of what Yoga really is. Those aspects are usefull, but a lot of times you get these teachers talking a bunch of **** they know nothing about.. What is meditation really? Just focusing as far as us non Hindi are concerned, deeper levels of focus are great. But to start using lingo that we really don't know jack about is just salesmanship for something we may consider cool, or exotic.. Really, some teachers are ****ing silly.. Like wearing a yamaka around every day, and not knowing what a synagogue, or the Torah is..
Actually yoga is pretty good. It's quite tough. And you are surrounded by lots of chicks in spandex, bending over in front of you. How is that gay?
Well yes, the spiritual aspect is a bunch of hooey. The versions refined down to exercise routines are much preferable.
I wouldn't cast out a blanket statement that Yoga is useless. Nothing is useless if someone feels that it works to their benefit. For example, if some guy thinks wrapping a towel around his neck and standing on his roof helps him get ready for fights - then I'm all for it. It's really up to each individual to determine what helps them - physically and psychologically. Trying something like Yoga or ballet as a supplement to one's formal training isn't necessarily a bad idea. It's all subjective and thinking outside of the box is good for any living, creative individual.
