So as im reading all these threads i began thinking to myself. does boxing need the drama of the **** talking and the soap opera atmosphere to make fights more exciting? i mean do all the fighters poppin off and the trainers talkin **** make people more excited about fights or is it at a point where the loyal fans will watch due to the actual battle of wills and the exhibition of fighting technique as well as power. i mean ill admit i like a lil **** talkin here or there but it seems to me alotta **** talkin is pretty pointless and alotta the fights are never made due to mone yissues or even fighters knowing that its not in their best interest. does it all get boring and repetitive to u after a while? just a thought. what do u guys think
Yes, it does. A fight is just a fight, but if you give it added context....greater meaning....bitter rivalaries....P4P listings....titles shots....rematches....then it becomes more than just a fight.
I only like trash talk if it is real. You can generally tell when it is fake. Like Tommy Hearns and Marvin Hagler exchanging some words before their fight, both promising that the fight isn't going the distance, etc., that is real and you can see it. Mindless trash talk doesn't excite me.
Nope, but it does need to put on meaningful fights with good undercards. Why pay $40-50 dollars to watch guys beat nobodies and have a card full of nobodies? That's what's killing this great sport.
boxing is not just a sport, it is entertainment. it is just like every other sport. peole want to hear about boxers lives. when they go to see them they want to see a big production. when the boxer performs they want to be entertained.
When I see films of old time pre fight press conferences , I am amazed at the decorum and the quiet dignity of the fighters and the trainers and managers. No trash talk or boasting. Even the behavior after fights was different. Rocky Marciano, behind on points, knocks Joe Walcott into the next solar system with one punch, and after Jersey Joe is counted out on his ear, Marciano calmly walks back to his corner, is gently congratulated, and stands quiet while his gloves are cut off. Nowadays prelim fighters celebrate relatively meanless wins hoisted on the shoulders of their handlers, paraded around the ring as if they had just saved the world. Hell, Acelino Freitas quit against Juan Diaz, and his handlers carried him around, while be beat on his chest, as if he was proclaimed the greatest fighter ever. There certainly is a different mind set nowadays, when quitters celebrate more than the old time winners did.
I absolutely love how many of the old-timers handled their wins. They just took it and moved on. So solemn and professional.
Couldnt have said it better myselfd with respect id like to add my .2 As Jim Lampley said during the JMM-Diaz fight, as the economy begins to tumble, boxing begins to rise again. Boxing and boxers are a testament to the struggles of man as said above. The more and more we lose money, the more ghettos rise, the more boxing gyms will be built. Boxing is coming back and coming back strong. Trust me, within the next few years boxing will be huge again. Its due. About the drama, I dont believe boxing NEEDS the drama. I think its better when the people can feel it. When you can feel the hate that barrera had for morales, that was real, that was athe best. Gatti and Ward had 3 great great fights without much drama. Boxing is fine without drama. We just need hungrier fighters who arent afraid of getting hurt and afraid of how theyll be after boxing. just fight. it seems ****ed up, i know, but its true. you sacrifice for the greater reward.
I am currently reading "The Sweet Science" by A.J. Liebling and I would wish to have lived in those days were seeing boxing and watching boxing was a big difference. Imagine to go to a big fight and that isn't broadcast on TV and everybody who knows that you were there will ask you like crazy about it. I mean, going there watching them pound each other with your fav winning it and afterwards you're going to his own club celebrating the victory with him when even the people on the streets are still ecstatic, dancing in masses...
''The reason they made Rocky I,II,III,IV,V and ****ing VI is because people believe in bull****''.-the great poet uncla Roger.
That's right a lot of **** talking are pointless . . . coming from delussional nuthuggers. . . . like for example . . . JMM has been robbed 4 times . . . 4 times ???? :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl Boxing needs HYPING to earn money at the gates not bullcraps. :deal
yeah i know it needs hyping up. but too o ften its all talk and void on the action. does that hurt the sport
