...or because his mother was Irish?

Fewer props than who? There was a time on this forum where he was literally the most lauded fighter of all. I think compared to Holman Williams and Jimmy Bivins he does rather well.

Something I sense, more than anything else, Mc. Casual fans respond to Archie Moore's name, certainly SRR, but Burley's like a master written about in a coffee table book, not really flesh 'n blood.

At least he wasn't Scottish, amirite?

    Also he's fairly highly rated.

I remember reading how fered he was and how avoided he was by everyone including Robinson

I was impressed until I got a look at him. Then I laughed.

Then I left and never gave Charley a second look

    Burley's minimum-offense, snore-producing, safety-first style?

I think Burley was an avoided fighter simply because he might just very well beat you, I do also think he, like LaMotta, gets a little more than perhaps he actually deserves. I do think too that he wasn't always reported or recorded in the best light.

but reporters did that, and they were equally hard on such greats as Jersey Joe, Ezzard Charles and Lloyd Marshall. So Burley has gained loads of props in the last 20 yrs, but defo not enough in his own time. But again, he wasn't alone!

and yes his style surely had something to do with it, but again he could most certainly beat a good few too, another great example of boxing injustice.
