Does Calzaghe get enough respect for fighting the last 4/5 years with brittle hands?

Joe Calzaghes biggest problem wasn't his hands,it was the fact that he wasn't black and/or American.
If he had been, his legacy as one of the greatest boxers ever would be written in stone.

Of course he should. I just don't like nuthuggers of his(anykind not just pointing at them) they seem so bent on destroying Hops and RJJ anyway they can. Annoying. Doesn't take away from Zaghe as a fighter. Still great and remains the most accomplished/best at SMW. Had very questionable stoppages but what wasn't given to him was his ability to adapt which was very impressive. He could've beaten anyway at SMW now.

This video is crazy. Just early stoppage after early stoppage. Most of the opponents were on their feet, and they protested the stoppage. Most didn't even look hurt.

I think a lot of intangibles get ignored by boxing fans. Records are comprised by the wins and losses a fighter has, but those simple numbers don't put into perspective what the boxer has to go through. Some fighters have all the advantages in the world whereas others have to go through constant pain and suffering in order to succeed.

The mental side of boxing is another thing which doesn't get touched on enough. If a guy loses and says it's because a family member died, everyone rushes to say it's an excuse and that he's a bum. How can any outsider make that comment? They may be supreme fighters but they're not infallible and are as vulnerable to the same emotions and feelings which plague everyone else in life.

Years down the line, when these fighters are being talked about, they say "Calzaghe slapped" or "This guy lost easily in his prime". What they don't say is that Calzaghe went through agony every day to stay a world champion and the other guy only lost because his mind was elsewhere. Why are these things irrelevant?

In my opinion, us fans do fighters disservice when we simply judge what happens in the ring. A fight often has far more intricacies than 'who was better' and that shouldn't be forgotten.

Calslappy is a joke. if he was black and American no one would even remember his name right now. His slapping style is the ugliest thing I ever saw in the ring and if he was fighting in the USA he could not avoid great fighters and would have several losses on his record. BTW I always hated RJJ and never was a fan of Bhop

Good post Jack! Remember how Hearns broke his hand against Hagler in the first round, Mayweather had a bad hand injury in one of his fights. It's unbelievable what these guys go through, to put on a show for the fans. Calzaghe had a great career, and those criticising him need to remember that Calzaghe cleared out the SMW division, and then moved up and beat the man at LHW to become the man in two divisions.

It's ironic that fans of Hopkins and Jones will come on here and criticise Calzaghe, when for example Hopkins spent his career beating up the likes of Hakkar, Joppy and Allan, blown up welterweights and he ducked Joe Calzaghe when both were prime. Jones never beat the man in any division he campaigned at, you can argue that he was a paper champion throughout most of his career.

It's nothing new or special about a fighter injuring his hands. It happens all the time.

yea thats fair enough. Its good to hear that guys in Finland are calling him out for his performance against Chisora though. That rematch has to happen!

Whats the situation on his injury then? Is it career threatening?

And yea every time i see Helenius i just remember ONE thing...

Not to the extent that Calzaghe had to deal with.
Every single training camp he had to take injection after injection just to be able to train. Doctors told him if he carried on fighting he loses his hand.
