yup when you've got lacking stuff to bring the table, it always becomes about magical mythical "intangibles". every freaking time.
Good post. I'd have liked to have seen him fight more southpaws. Fights against the likes of: Liles, Nunn, Tarver and Dawson would have all intrigued me. Also, a fight against Ward.
all 4 would have been hard fights IMO i think nunn would have had the style to give calzaghe the most trouble. a very hard man to outbox.
He's not textbook - most of his skills are hard to be summed up in moments. In terms of fighters with consistently massive punch output (at least later in his career, after he tweaked his style because of bad hands), I'd say Calzaghe's ability to remain accuracy despite throwing well in excess of 6-or-700 punches per fight is the best I remember seeing. I've seen many swarmers who throw lots of punches. I've seen many fighters who choose accuracy. There aren't a grand list of people who can do both. Joe Calzaghe has the style to beat Floyd Mayweather, for example.
It's not a realistic fight and, as such, I'm not claiming he would beat him. I'm saying the style with which he boxed late in his career - high and accurate punch output - is how I believe you beat Mayweather.
And you know what Mayweather does with guys with punch output? After eating a couple of counters and check hooks from Floyd, you'll see Zaghe's activity diminish.
Maidana aside, who are the high punch output fighters he has fought? There aren't many of them even in the sport in the last decade or so to begin with. Maidana is the only person who has truly tested the theory.
