Disrupt Calzaghe's rythm? Calzaghe is the one that disrupts rythms. Calzaghe himself has no rythm other than 'full steam ahead'. And footwork? Calzaghe is like an energizer bunny and jumps all over the place. Nah, if Dawson wins it will be because he could hold him on the outside and hug every time Joe comes in. In order to beat Joe, you would need to box an incredibly focused fight.
better question. does dawson struggle with calzaghe's speed? joe aint know dinosaur like johnson and tarver
Wait wait...Newsflash..Joe has incredibly fast hands..Prime Roy Jones fast but obviously less power..but he makes up for it with volume. I'm sure Ill be seeing the same guys calling Dawson exposed if they fight
Thats just plain stupid; you're talking as if Mayweather cleaned out the division; he never faced any of the top dogs at 147.
But Dawson hasn't shown thus far in his career that he can fight that kind of focussed 12 round fight. Not anything close. Nor has he shown any sign that his stamina allows him to carry out the 'three minute assaults' that you suggest. At this stage saying that 'Dawson just has to up his workrate and he wins' is no different to saying 'Calzaghe just has to punch harder and he knocks Dawson out'.
Dawson doesnt like pressure has a leaky defence and a weaker chin. He fights is spurts and can switch off when fighting over 12 rounds. Dawsons counter punching gets him off to a good start before Joe adapts, starts landing and ups the workrate. Calzaghe UD. A good fight for Calzaghe to take imo. Dawson is the biggest challenge for Calzaghe at the minute but I dont see a p4p star in Chad Dawson...:bart
+1 The analogy in your last paragraph is perfect, Cobbler. That's exactly right. Joe makes guys fight his fight, not vice versa. Think of Joe-Bhop vs Bhop-Pavlik. A guy that was reduced to one-punch-and-grabbing, walking to the wrong corner 4 times at the ends of rounds and whining like a chump over nonexistent low blows suddenly turns into Mr. Handspeed and Bolo Puncher? Not. That's because Calzaghe is >>>>> Pavlik and forces guys to fight at a pace they can't handle and with a style (relentless pressure) that changes what guys are able to do with respect to how they normally fight. And, as Cobbler and others have pointed out, Dawson isn't even a 'workrate' guy to begin with, let alone his being able to be a 'workrate' guy against Calzaghe. Chad doesn't fight hard throughout his fights for 3 minutes of every round. Everyone knows this. It isn't something that is going to magically go away if he signs to fight Calzaghe. If he ever decides to change this habit -- and I doubt that he will anytime soon -- it will take a lot of work with a good trainer to do it. Think of Manny Steward teaching Lewis or Wlad to jab-and-grab during their careers to help hide their chins. It took some time for Lewis, and Wlad is still refining the technique today. You can't just change a guy's style overnight. If you want to get an idea of what Calzaghe-Dawson would look like, think Dawson-Johnson, with Joe as a faster, throws-more-punches (and has less power) Glen Johnson. Joe would be all over Dawson from the word 'go' and in very short order Dawson's speed would only be relevant for the harried counters he would be throwing. As Chad is not a big puncher, the shots he landed -- no matter how fast they were thrown -- would mean little and wouldn't deter Calzaghe in any way. If Chad managed to knock Calzaghe down, that wouldn't matter, either. Ask the other guys who knocked him down, especially BHop and Salem. Each of those two are far rougher fighters than is Dawson, and neither was able to get Joe to alter his aggression in any appreciable way for the rest of their bouts after they sent Calzaghe to the canvas. Asking Dawson to fight 3 minute rounds -- especailly against someone as good, experienced and relentless as Joe -- is like asking ODLH to be the aggressor when he fights PBF. It's not going to happen, and if it does happen, it's not going to happen effectively and consistently enough for it to matter. Getting Dawson to change his timid and slack pugilistic ways is a long-term project, one that will not be completed until well after Calzaghe hangs up his gloves for the final time, if it ever happens at all.
Calzaghe doesn't have a granite chin he's got a granite heart. He has definitely been hurt, it's just that he doesn't really care and just gets more aggressive (which puts the other guy on the back foot). It's risky but it has worked well for him. Hopkins didn't go to war with Calzaghe, but then he rarely goes to war with anyone. After saying he wasn't going to lose to a white boy, there was no way he was going to risk getting KO'd, even if it meant losing on points. RJJ got so badly smashed by Glen Johnson that I think everything he does after that can be excused for the rest of his life. Devastating KO. Calzaghe's a clever fighter. Kessler had him hurt earlier on with an uppercut so he changed tactics and stayed away from him for the rest of the fight. To beat Joe you need output because that's where he wins his points. He didn't actually do anything to Hopkins for 12 rounds, but since he was throwing more punches he was getting more points, simple as that. It's an amateurish way to score, but that's the way it is. The second thing you need is intelligence, and if you're stupid like a lot of guys are, you need someone intelligent in the corner. A good cornerman and a high output would make it anyone's fight, regardless if you're Dawson, Taylor or anyone else. Finally, the physical condition has to be very high. There's no point gassing after 5 rounds, because Calzaghe keeps going from 3:00 of the first to 0:00 of the 12th. The first few rounds of Hopkins-Calzaghe looked like it was all over for him, but fights aren't fought over 4 rounds. Fitness, output and intelligence. If you're going to be tired, slow and stupid then don't bother turning up.
