I really think so. a lot of people just see him as come forward brawler with no defensive skill or boxing ability. which was far from the truth

He could box really well and had very good head movement. his punch accuracy was superb and often overlooked

I have read many threads on who would win between JCC and Duran and sweet pea. Lots of people really diss JCC's chances against these two. I think that he has a stone cold 50-50 chance to beat anyone in history @ the divisions that he fought great at

I rate Chavez highly. At his best, I give him a 50-50 chance against a peak Duran.
I dont take much notice of what others on this board say.

I agree with you on Chavez. Too many people think that unless you conform to a certain style, a conventional 'silky' boxer who boxes on the outside, jabbing and always going for headshots, concentrating on using speed and athleticism, then if you don't fight like this, you aren't a "skilled" boxer. It's nonsense, Chavez's style of fighting is every bit as skilled and effective, and JCC himself was a master at it.

However, I don't know if I agree he is underrated in this here Classic Forum. As far as I know, more or less everyone agrees that Whitaker, Chavez and RJJ are the top 3 of the last 20-25 years p4p, and that Chavez should be 1 of the top 20 p4p fighters ever.

And yet however, my own opinion is that Duran would definitely beat him, and that Whitaker probably would, but that does not mean I do not think he is a true great of all-time, just that Duran is a superior fighter and that Whitaker would probably beat him stylistically.

    JC=Superstar.

Yes, Very Underatted and hated mostly because of his actions in defeat.
(People tend to not like the fact that Chavez hated to lose, and was often called a sore loser or abad sport by never ack any of his defeat's)

But what people fail to understand, is that version of Chavez was not the P4P
best fighter of the Mid 80's/Early 90's, It was a post Taylor on the decline JCC.

A good loser is a loser. You're right that shouldn't be held against JCC, and your point on Chavez's peak is bang on as well. How many times have I read that Whitaker beat a 'peak' Chavez?! He most certainly did not!

No. Seeing as I've regularly seen him ranked as top 20 p4p of all-time on this forum.

I don't think I've ever seen Chavez outside of a top 30 all time list that's been posted on the classic forum.

Just because most pick Duran and Whitaker to beat him does not mean he is underrated. You'll find those majority opinions no matter where you go.

I rate Chavez very highly. I think him and Duran would be a war, but Duran is arguably the greatest Lightweight ever and I'd give Duran a slight edge. I rate Chavez higher historically than Whitaker, but it's a tough stylistic matchup for him as proven by the fight they had.

Unfortuatley, I would say yes. Its a shame, that many posters on here today only look at "sportscenter" hype, and think if you do not conform to the razzle dazzle, then you somehow suck. There are so many subtleties that people today take for granted, such as body punching, amazing stamina, good chin, etc., mean nothing, and that if you possess "only" these skills, you are overrated and suck. It irritates me when people cant look beyond the tips of their noses and can't appreciate great fighters, such as Chavez.

there are and have been a great many Chavez threads with differing opinions within.

I would not say he's underrated.HTe problem seems to be that he often ends up getting discussed regarding Whitaker or the Whitaker fight specifically.

I strongly feel there is not nearly enough Chavez vs Whitaker discussion.More threads are needed quickly.;)

The great BL is #1 with Gans behind him. Duran is #5. I don't know where Chavez is. WHo did he beat at lightweight that was so great? Rosario was already beaten by Hector Camacho and Ramirez twice.

JC Chavez was a top fighter. He could punch, had a great left to the body, and was durable. Don King did something right by putting Chavez out on PPV cards.

Chavez was not a all time p4p great in my book because he wasn't a good boxer.

The draw with Whitaker was a gift for Chavez. For those who remember this robbery, Whitaker actually had Chavaez buzzed.
