Does Darren Barker deserve another title shot?

Firstly I like Darren & fast car so this isnt intended to be a Matchroom bashing thread.

He is ranked 5 on the official IBF site & has only beaten Spada who is ranked inside the top 10….

Looking at the fightnews website he is ranked 12 with the WBO, and not ranked in the top 15 of any other governing body. I am not quite sure how he managed to wrangle a shot a Geale because I don’t recall him fighting in an “eliminator” or anything along the way.

We’ve got Macklin, Murray, Barker, Lee all with decent rankings, fighting for world titles but not against each-other. There are some decent names at 160 but it seems the British fighters are just jumping strait into world title fights without beating anyone of any note prior.

    Thoughts?

I think he does deserve it, showed he can mix it at that level against Sergio IMO has been inactive due to injury but up until that point was progressing well. I think he will beat Geale as well

You can always produce an argument against anyone "deserving" a shot but Barker is certainly a credible opponent for Geale. Did Murray deserve his shot against Sturm? In these days of alphabet titles it's far more to do with who your promoter is then whether you really deserve to be fighting for a title, as in got yourself into a mandatory position. With bad luck Barker has had with injuries I certainly don't begrudge him another title shot.

Eddie has good links in the ibf so he uses that to manourve his fighters into title shots. All promoters do it, wazza does it with the wbo and hatton with the wba. I think he does deserve it because he put up a good show against martinez, i dont have a problem with fighters who put up a good showing in previous world title fights and then have a few decent wins before getting another title shot. murray put in a good showing against sturm so he got the martinez shot, fair enough. macklin did decent enough against martinez so got his gg shot. They have put up good showings so have got other oppurtunities. Purdy didnt put up a good showing at weekend so wont get another chance and will have to earn it the old eliminator way. rees, eventhough he got battered by broner, was fun to watch and came to win and went to war so will get asked back. Promoters use their links to get trinkets and get the rankings but its up to their fighters to put up a good fight and make it exciting.

Look at all the **** fighters fighting for 'World titles' these days, at least Darren is a skilled. It's a paper title anyway, so of course he deserves a shot.

This is the fight can make all the other domestic fights happen too!

If Barker wins then he can make £££ defending against Macklin, Lee and Murray and we all get the domestic fights we want to see happen.

Geale is a pretty decent all round operator but he doesn't hit especially hard and I could see Barker using his height and reach advantage to stick the jab in his face all night long then follow up with right hands when the opportunity arises, Geale seems to come forward in pretty straight lines. Interesting fight anyway, if it was at MSG or even just at a venue in NYC I'd probably go over for it but it's in the middle of nowhere in NY State somewhere and it all just sounds like a logistical nightmare.

People are forgetting the bottom line here. It's a fight between two good contenders in the division, which can only be a good thing right? Who cares about the belt.

  9. yes he does deserve a title shot, lost to martinez then beat two euro level fighters.

the "big 3" all deserve shots for titles, macklin and murray should be champions already arguably.

As Buncey would say, "In boxing you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate".

Just look at some recent middleweight belt challengers - Guerrero, Murray, Rosado, Ishida, Mundine. None of them really earned a shot, not just a British thing this.

He is a top 15 middleweight. Better than a number of recent challengers. Its a voluntary and he is going to another country.

True felt he needed another step up though. But did beat former European champ in 4 rounds in Hope.
