I've been saying forever that Dempsey gets an incomplete because he never stepped up in his prime. He showed more against Sharkey and Tunney as a shell in many ways than he ever did in his prime ..

It probably is (I'm not being rude when I say that). You can say blacks are over-represented among the best sprinters. In the same way you might say whites are over-represented in the professional classes.

What is interesting about white sprinters is that the best time for a white sprinter has barely moved in decades. White athletes are simply not competing. Even if they were failing to match the black sprinters, considering the improvement in PEDs, we should still expect white times to also be improving.

The other issues is of course that race is defined very narrowly in the US but as this thread shows few people can really be classified so simply on racial grounds.

 

If you were to take both Tunney and Sharkey fights combined...I would estimate Dempsey probably lost 24-25 out of 27 rounds. Of course, I kind of sound like a Vitali fan with that line. But the point is, just "how much more" did he show while past his prime? He got clobbered in both fights, and lucked out with a shot to the balls in the sharkey fight. No doubt he showed his punching prowess with that left hook..but he didn't show much else.
