A good bare knuckle fighter is a tough guy who can brawl, can take a punch and land a hard punch. Nothing to do with modern boxing and gloves janitor, skill takes a back seat in this form of combat, usually the tougher guy wins
No he is not. It is practically impossible to score a quick knockout in a bare knuckle fight, because of the 30/38 second count. Furthermore a man who goes in quickly like Dempsey did, will soon smash his fists to pieces. Bare-knuckle fights were a patient mans game. The tougher guy might win, because it is essentially an endurance contest, but skill was everything. Bare-knuckle boxing had a skill set all of its own, and it was nothing like what Dempsey had.
I never ever mentioned the Word ko here. I said " a guy who could hit hard and take a good punch". a heavy-handed puncher will deal more damage and the tougher guy will last longer. And no, skill is not everything at all. Absolutely false
Despite my misgivings over Dempsey's career, or rather the estimation of it on a boxing level, he had the material to be an excellent, top-flight fighter. Quicks, power, toughness, balance, chin, athleticism... It could translate to any era. May not lead to overwhelming success but he would be elite and have a very good chance to grab a belt.
