Does ESPN regret wasting money on Fury yet?

Look I have no problems with anyone being a big fan of any particular fighter. I'm sure you know I passionately support Deontay Wilder.

However that will never stop me from being objective.

If Wilder was pulling the stunts Fury has been doing these last several years, I could not defend it or pretend it was not harming his career.

My issue with fury fans(not saying you in particular) is that they want to pretend his actions have no bearing on his career and his standing as a respected boxer within boxing.

It's as if they want to us to believe that his reputation is still booming in spite of taking drugs, ducking fights against competitive opposition, taking padding out of his gloves, lying about donations and avoiding defeat against a glorified prizefighter.

The longer these shenanigans continue to unfold the more Fury's stock drops, not increases.

If you believe some then Arum is effectively bankrolling Fury for reasons which are quite hard to establish. He doesn’t sell any tickets, he doesn’t shift PPV sales, he’s not got a Hatton style local fanbase. Even when matched against Wilder business was pretty lukewarm. Which begs the question as to why an old timer like Arum would chuck millions at him?

My guess is that the figures some have suggested are way over what Fury is getting in reality. Arum wants a slice of Joshua v Fury for sure, but he’s not paying Fury tens of millions to fight in front of a thousand paying punters.

Just to add Tone, he has been paid $15 million by the WWE for a 'string of cameo appearances'. This is in addition to the $22.5 million already paid out by ESPN for his first 2 fights.

 

More to do with the heavyweight scene hardly thriving in the US than anything else I can imagine.

 

Absolutely this. It’s a tallest dwarf contest if the only fights it’s up against are the likes of Rahman v Maskaev.

Considering Wilder v Fury was an unbeaten heavyweight world title fight business was bang average. Fury fans always seem to get a bit touchy when they think someone is suggesting Tyson isn’t that popular.

 

Honestly Tony, why are you so obsessed with Fury? I genuinely want to know. Every thread you pop up just repeating the same thing over and over, why? This is a genuine question and not meant as a dig.

 

I think Tyson is popularish but I can guarantee that if I went around my work asking people what they think of Tyson Fury the most common response will be that they think he's a bit of a d**khead, which I kind of think he is, very good boxer, arguably the best in his division, but he's not popular or well known for the right reasons, he's well known because of his antics, his comments and now for his WWE exploits. Clever marketing though, it has to be said.

 

Yeah he's well known but im not sure many of those people would pay to watch him fight.

 

There's a lot of love on the forum for Fury but the weird, obsessive hatred towards him by the likes of Sepiroth whatever and Tony Hayers is proof that Fury is the biggest deal in the heavyweight division inside and outside of the ring. The really top names in the sport divide opinion the most; think Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather and Canelo.

 

The final sentence is bizarre considering the global exposure he now has and the millions and millions in the Bank of Fury.

Why are BOXING fans delighted that Fury has more money in the bank but is performing less in the ring? It’s just utterly bizarre.

 

They're singing the same song as Joshua fans who were rightly criticize for bringing up his bank balance as if it were their own.

jeffrey Epstein also had a magnificent bank account, yet look where his actions took him.

Amir Khan also has a great bank balance, yet do you think any true fans of the sport take him seriously and rate him?

 

A clear sign of the times, sadly. Fighters openly say that it's all business these days, the only flipside is that when those fighters lose it's beautiful.
