Does everyone now accept that Mikkel Kessler was not "RUINED" by the Calzaghe defeat?

I only just re-watched the Froch vs Kessler fight again today as I was pretty drunk and not really scrutinizing the action first time around, and I have to say I was pretty impressed with Kessler.

I have NEVER rated the guy, I've always thought he was pretty robotic and really limited, but now I think I've maybe been a bit harsh.

I expected Carl Froch to beat him and beat him well, but Kessler has more about him than I thought. Froch basically handicaps himself in every fight by his ludicrous "hands down" style, but he is still a hell of a rough and proud fighter, and takes some beating, but I think Kessler won deservedly.

But anyway, the point of this thread is to see if there are still people on this forum who think that Joe Calzaghe "ruined" Mikkel Kessler - as I have seen MANY threads and posts to this effect.

Sorry, but I think that is as DUMB an opinion as you are likely to find on this forum.

Mikkel Kessler came overseas to fight a more experienced and more proven fighter in his own backyard.

He did not get stopped, he did not get dropped, he did not get badly hurt, he did not lose every round. He fought a very good, very proud fight, and it was always competitive.

How the hell can that "ruin" anyone??!

The answer has always been that it can't, that it was a ****ing stupid opinion to start with, and that Mikkel's performance vs Froch proved that beyond doubt. :good

I certainly don't think Calzaghe ruined him but I do think he's definitely faded and I also felt the Froch fight was damn close and both men did very well with each other. I scored it for Kessler, but was calling a lot of rounds that I felt could reasonably go the other way for him.

the only people that say that are asshurt kessler fanboys that use that as a ploy to downplay wards one-sided schooling, and crackzaghe fanboys that use that as a means to inflate their idols career. anyone else knows that utter nonsense

Not ruined. Just exposed to what he is: pretty good but not elite.

It was just an attempt to discredit Ward's performance.

Some Calzaghe fans are hyper sensitive about his career. Since Kessler isn't apparently awesome and Lacy went on to do nothing, they were ruined by Calzaghe. I guess you can't prove either way.

i never thought kessler was "ruined." he had a rough stretch w/ that god forsaken promoter of his and that cost him valuable time in the ring which showed when he did finally come back.

not to nit-pick but he was hurt, by his own admission, by calzaghe to the body. not "in trouble" hurt, but hurt nonetheless.

but i agree, popkins, he is not a ruined fighter. however, the kessler of the calzaghe fight would probably have stopped froch. kessler has apparently picked up some habits that he never used to exhibit. kessler used to throw a very crisp, straight, 1-2. in fact, it was one of the best in the game. but he's been looping many of his shots of late. this actually affected him in the froch fight. froch was fighting off his backfoot a lot and instead of throwing that beauty of a 1-2 kess used to throw, he was looping his shots in and leaving himself wide open for froch to counter. froch himself even said he didnt press the attack enough when kess left himself open.

but these are bad habits and not the mark of a ruined fighter. he's got plenty in the tank as he showed against froch. he's always been a favorite fighter of mine and i'm glad to see him back w/ a strap.

I never felt that Kessler was ruined by Calzaghe. He was beaten by a superior fighter. That's not a knock on him considering Calzaghe's ability.

The Ward loss is also one he shouldn't be crucified for. Ward is a superlative fighter and future pound for pound number one.

Certainly not Ruined by Calzaghe, but Kessler before the Calzaghe fight looked much better than Kessler since after the Calzaghe fight. He'll he peaked in the 1st 4 rounds of the Calzaghe fight and he's never gotten back to the same level. I thought he looked somewhat past prime vs. Froche and I attribute that to both Calzaghe and Ward.

I don't think Calzaghe ruined Kessler, if anyone broke Kessler mentally it was Ward. I believe after Ward, Kessler changed his trainers got a sports therapist and tried to change his style.

i didn't vote because it was a bull**** post. kessler wasn't ruined by the calzaghe fight. he put up a great fight against calzaghe and went out still fighting. kessler was ruined when ward whipped his ass.

How can you ruin a never was? People try to forget that Lacy was getting schooled by ****ing Omar Sheika until his power bailed him out, what really ruined Lacy was his shoulder injury.

I'm not sold on Ward as a future P4P No.1,, but stranger things have happened -but really,, ruined by Calzaghe? Not many thought he was ruined by calzaghe immediately following their fight.. Lacy on the other hand

Some fighters improve mentally after losses...I really dont know if Mikkel did but he certainly wasnt ruined. He clammed up a bit in the Ward fight, I cant say for sure if the Zaghe fight had anything to do with that, I tend to think Ward is just better then people thought and had a style that Mikkel couldnt solve.

Losses can certainly ruin guys and in this era more often do...Even though physically they may be in their absolute peak still, mentally it can take a lot out on a guy. Especially now where a loss is just not acceptable in so many people's eyes.
