Does Ezzard Charles have a good case in being considered a greater ATG than Sugar Ray Robinson?

SRR on film looks 'better' than Ezz to my eye.
Ezz's résumé is insane and unlike Greb, I have ability to see him on film and he looks exquisite.

Robbi was never sparked like Ezz was by Walcott but then there's Ezz's résumé - as well as being HW champ, he also has some credible HW wins against good contenders.

Robbi is my number one and I have Ezz behind Greb, Armstrong, Pep and maybe Langford - but the margins are razor thin and the criteria is cumulative, résumé, H2H prowess, dominance and their ability on film.

Ray Robinson has better filmed performances but overall Charles has the greater resume.

I read that Robinsons manager floated the idea of A fight with Ezzard Charles and Robinson said "you ****ing fight him"

 

Ray Robinson is the best on film I've ever seen,,Greb has the most incredible resume . I believe they are #1 and #2 in whatever order you wish to place them

 

Robinson had more skin in the game than his manager. Ray knew that at every stage of his career Charles was too big for him. When Ezzard was a middleweight and a light heavyweight, Ray was a lightweight and a welterweight. When Ray was a middleweight, Ezz was a heavyweight.

 

I'm not going to try to make that case but Charles' resume speaks for itself:

The only case I can see is Moore x 3, which I think trumps even Robinson's best wins. On the other hand SRR has Gavilan x 2 and LaMotta x 5, so it's not like he's without great wins himself to go with the rest.

So not really, I'd say. If he had beaten a prime Louis, I think a case could have been made, though.

 

But as for the Louis win, you can argue that he beat a better version of Louis than Marciano did and no one, besides him and Marciano, was able to beat comeback Louis.

 

There isn't actually much size difference between the two prime for prime except Ray was a bit lighter, there is a photo of them shaking hands and they are quite similar stature wise.. which makes it even more incredible what Charles was able to do in his career by comparison.. he 100% has the better resume.. Charles defeated incredible competition - perhaps the best ever:

• Charley Burley twice
• Lloyd Marshall twice

Second only to Greb IMO... Charles has that incredible 5 year period from 46-51 where he beat Moore, Bivins & Marshall multiple times & then jumped to HW to beat Walcott & Louis.. also note Walcott had 15lbs on him & Louis had over 30lbs on him... Robinson never faced size deficits quite like Charles fights with Layne, Walcott & Louis except for 1 fight.. Maxim.. which broke him.. Charles even took on the big Cuban Nino Valdes albeit he lost... I personally am more impressed by Charles's career than Robinsons.. but I don't begrudge anyone who favours Ray.

 

It's a very good win, but beating prime Louis would be something else.
