By that i mean, is he really a world class boxer, or is he just a supreme athlete?

if this is the case he should retire on top before his body lets him down. boxers of this ilk grow old over night.

what you guys think? is he a great boxer or just a great athlete?

He is a much better boxer than Jones who was a better athlete. The differences are more pointed than the similarities.

Are you quite new to the sport? I don't mean to insult you, i am genuinely curious.

I think it's a mixture of both. Not only does he show great reflexes but unlike Jones, he also shows great technical abilities. He has great defense and doesn't rely on strictly speed like RJJ did. After hearing about the fight last night the only way I think Floyd loses is by going up to a division he doesn't belong in.

the difference between the two is that at both their absolute physical peaks, roy jones is on a level higher than floyd because jones has shown incomparable athleticsm in his prime. but after both fighters lose their athleticsm (roy already did), floyd IMO will still be more successful compared to him because floyd has very solid fundamentals.

Theres is no comparison at all between Jones and Floyd. Floyd is the most fundamentally sound boxer in decades. Jones was a guy who lived off uncanny reflex's and speed and did everything wrong according to the book. Jones because of his flaws fundamentally never adjusted or adapted his style. Floyd is a fighter who is constantly ad******g. He's way smarter than Jones was as a boxer.

FMJ is a learned boxer, a technician. Jones was a supreme talent, a great athlete. FMJ's technical ability will linger longer than Jones' skills and reflexes did, which inevitably diminished with age.

Jones never had a great defence and thats what let him down later on in his career.

Floyd has a great defence and thats the one thing that will allow him to continue fighting.

He is a world class boxer...and so was Jones btw. If you're just a great athlete..You're not going anywhere in this sport. RJJ's problem was that he couldn't take punches like let's say...Mavrovic , Vitali or Tua ...It's hard to blame him.

Haha i am not. i got into the sport the night bruno signed for the rematch with tyson.

i dont compare the fighting styles. i am questioning floyds reliance on his athleticsm as this was the downfall of jones

Floyd is a smart fighter who grew up on boxing. You get the feeling he knows himself better than any other boxer and will use his skills to make the most of his physical abilities at any time i.e. when he gets older he will fight smart like Hopkins. He has the great defense and the skill to not get hit, so you could see him being successful even when he's older.

Though I can't see him being around too much longer, he loves that "O" too much. And it's not like he has a lack of $'s, well, not unless the tax-man comes a knocking!

Little different. FMJ is a great athlete who has applied himself to become a world class boxer. RJJ was a legendary athlete who just happened to box. RJJ would have probably made the history books in any sport he chose.

Unfortunately for RJJ the science of fighting is more important than being a supreme athlete. (Though it does help tremendously.)

mayweather is NOT going to suffer the same fate as jones. All floyd does all day in training is techincal exercises.

Do you see him still being great when his speed goes?
