Floyd's record will be overshadowed by circumstances. Marciano, Calzaghe, and Finito get mentioned for their records, but nobody suggests they could have been beaten by their contemporaries at any point. Any time Floyd is brought up, there will always be talk of how many fighters he ducked, how he timed his fights, how he was open about fighting anyone he wanted because his health came first, etc. There's no way anybody will look at him favorably 50 years from now. He is a despicable human being ("Just like SRR, LaMotta, etc.") and the difference between him and the ones who came before him is he does his nonsense in the public eye during his career. Back in the day people didn't really have an understanding of how bad guys were during their careers. Even his skills will be overshadowed: "Mayweather was one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time." "No, I am. Watch me go down to the elementary school and none of those kids will lay a hand on me. It's easy to look good and win against people who aren't good. Mayweather openly said he cherrypicked his opponents, and he openly said he avoided good fighters until the timing was right. How can we say he was any good at all? Plus the guy was a total douchebag." "But how many guys retired undefeated?" "How many guys openly refused to fight the best fighters in their divisions?"
The ducking will define it but that doesn't mean his entire resume is ****. If his resume is bad, defeating Pac is irrelevant.
Ask Calzaghe if the 0 means anything to his legacy...Just like pac, early on in the PBF days Arum was picking Mayweather's opponents (last one being Judah, just statin facts)...Margarito is a proven cheater so any serious attempt at legitimizing him is just that. IMO if forgotten Carlos Quitana sorta figured out Williams enough to make it a close fight, I always believed Floyd could decision Willliams (that slap jab and hurricane windmilling would've been nullified by Floyd. The monster that showed up to the Quintana rematch def would've been a threat, but Floyd still beats him IMO). I'm a fan of Floyd and many other boxers and i've have to say, you're at least taking a jab at an already great legacy, filled with wins over great fighters. Also, Canelo has zero willingness to go back to dance school for another record payday (don't know what to think of this, i'm jus saying:roll.
If Floyd manages to stay undefeated, then I think to some extent it will define his legacy. We only have to look as far as Calzaghe to see how far an 'undefeated aura' can get you post career. Judging by that, Floyd will benefit if he can hold onto his undefeated record. The only knock on his career is that Floyd Vs Mosley didn't take place much earlier.
It is a shame that the ZERO is the only thing keeping Floyd where he is. Once its gone thats game OVER for him... It is funny how a multiple loss fighter like Pacquiao can still be the number 2 draw in boxing and Floyd is obviously wary of him and the CHANCE that he could lose
He still needs his career defining fight. If he retired today, I'd have to say the Castillo fights were where he showed true greatness, but also his weaknesses.
Floyd will be remembered as the best of his era regardless of who he fights and remains undefeated....20+ champship victories mostly lineal...4 lineal titles possibly 1 more before retirement.... Beat more champs, contenders and titlists than guys with double his amount of fights( arguello, JCC, Whitaker or any other more beloved guy since 1970) No amount of hate can erase what he did nor will one fight make or break it...there has been other fights we missed...doesn't change pbf is the best fighter since Roy Jones in the 90s
