I know Ali had come back from his exile, but he was still a helluva fighter in 1971. Was it just the layoff or would Frazier have even troubled the very best Ali?

Angelo Dundee has said that the older Ali was better because he was stronger and more mature. Was Dundee right, and is Joe Frazier being sold short?

Frazier was a lot better than Terrell, Folley, chuvalo, Patterson, mildenburger, London and Cooper whom Ali defended against. So sure, Frazier would have always been tougher than anything Ali came up against in his first coming. Frazier would also have been the first world class chalenger who could match Ali for youth. As fast as ALi was he was a 1960s guy fighting a lot of 1950s contenders first time around. Most of them had been around since Marciano was champion.

I have watched this fight countless times, and I still marvel at it. I'm not sure that Ali does better in 1966. Frazier made Ali rush his punches and wasn't the stationary target that Cleveland Williams was.

To be honest, I don't think there were many fighters in history who could have beaten either Ali or Frazier on that night.

nope it would take a special fighter and a special performance to do so.
alot of guys you may have given a chance never showed that sort of 1 fight performance like lewis, and even holmes, louis. styleswise frazier has more difficulties but he was a man possessed that night. that frazier a tough man to beat. ali may never of lost a fight boxing like that.

No one gets enough credit for beating Ali on this board.

Ali was unbeatable therefore there was something wrong with any of his losing fights.

He was either coming out of exile, sick, well over the hill or stylistically mismatched.

That he simply got his ass beat is unthinkable.

Frazier left it all in the ring that night , was never the same after . That Frazier for FOTC would have given anyone problems even his nemisis Foreman. He really gave Ali a real beating that night which Ali and his crew managed by media manipulation to convince the public that he won . Frazier with all his physical disavantages compared to Ali must have had the most iron will and resolve of all time to come out on top.

Perko was so right in saying Frazier left it all in the ring that night... In truth,he was never the same after that fight. he put his entire being into the fight, determined to make Ali truly pay for all of his lip service. Truly a performance for the ages. THAT Frazier on that special evening, a performance for the ages !

Of course he got his credit due for beating Ali in 71:deal, and he was extremely close to beating him in 1975, but Futch pulled the plug, Ali said that fight was the closest he felt to death....

The 71 fight was Joes signature fight, and it made him who he was....

The night Frazier beat Ali in MSG he was a very great fighter.I believe Ali was slightly less than 100% and needed more ring rounds under his belt before taking on the best man in the world at that time.
I also believe that an Ali at the very top of his game would always beat Frazier.

Frazier would however always give him hell, because as he demonstrated that night he was prepared to walk through walls to win.
Many disagree with me and think the Frazier of that night would always have the "Indian Sign "over Ali.
Their opinions are not worth ****.

Seriously one point of view is as valid as the other.:goodimo.

Just like the delusional Tyson nut hugers, the Ali delusional fans will tell you Ali was shot and past it at 29 years old.

Not surprised by this comment. He was 29 when he fought Frazier coming out of nearly 4 years of exile, with 18rds under his belt in that time. How old was Frazier when he was past it ,sick ,over the hill against Foreman?

No, that's what the Frazier fans will tell you:lol:

Ali wasn't past it ,he just needed more ring rounds under his belt before taking on the number one fighter in the world. As it was he went 15rds with him and put him in the hospital not a bad effort.

Ali could have waited longer and had more fights after his exile McVey but his biggest weakness his ''EGO'' would'nt allow it , he thought any version of Ali was better than Frazier so he signed up after the Bonavena fight . Frazier truly kicked the Greatest [ and Ali is the GHWOAT ] arse big time that night - he got a wipping . Watch rd 11 Smokin Joe used the Greatest as punching bag.
